Read MoreThe time is almost upon us to say goodbye to Netflix's epic biopic fictionalizing the British royal family. Created by Peter Morgan, The Crown, which has captivated viewers since the series premiered in 2016, will end with its upcoming sixth season. The final episode will follow Season 5 (open in new tab), which focused on the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and will take viewers through another turbulent period from the late Princess Diana's death in 1997 to the 21st century. Here is what we know so far about the final season.
Netflix announced in July 2020 that "The Crown" would end after six seasons, but there were questions at one point about its length. Morgan had originally set the series at six seasons, but the creators had decided earlier that year to end the show after only five seasons. He later reverted to his original plan "to give due credit to the richness and complexity of the story."
Viewers will have to wait at least a year before the final season of The Crown is available on Netflix. The show has been filmed in a two-season cycle, with each season filmed back-to-back by each of the royal cast members. Season 5 and Season 6 will follow the same schedule, with filming for Season 6 beginning in September 2022, with two pauses to take into account the Queen's death and funeral, which is still ongoing. New episodes will likely premiere as early as late 2023 or early 2024.
The main cast of season 5, including Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth), Jonathan Pryce (Prince Philip), Lesley Manville (Princess Margaret), Dominic West (Prince Charles), Olivia Williams (Camilla Parker Bowles) (open in new tab) return for the final season. Elizabeth Debicki will also appear as Princess Diana in a scene depicting the late Princess Diana's final years.
New cast members include several new actors to portray the younger days of Prince William and Princess Kate. Meg Bellamy will play Kate, and Rufus Campa and Ed McVey will portray an older William. The casting of Prince Harry has not yet been announced. [Season 5 ended just before Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed met for the first time, so we know that "The Crown" season 6 will begin in the summer of 1997. The rest of the season will follow the series' formula of covering about 10 years of the Royal Family's life, including William and Kate's first meeting and Tony Blair's (Bertie Carvel) tenure as Prime Minister. It will also likely touch on the deaths of Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth (2002), which occurred within a few months of the year of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee.
Morgan also confirmed that the show will not continue into the present day and that the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not be covered; in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (open in new tab), the creators adopted a sort of 20-year rule He said that he prefers that the events he takes up happen 20 years ago.
"I think the more time that goes by, the more interesting it gets. Megan and Harry are on a journey, and we don't know what their journey is or how it will end. But it's much easier to write about something that happened at least 20 years ago," he told the magazine. 'That's enough time and distance to really understand something, to understand its role, to understand its position, to understand its relevance.'
Season 6, which takes place weeks before Princess Diana's untimely death and its emotional aftermath, Netflix confirmed that the production approached her fatal car accident in a sensitive way. A Netflix representative told The Sun (opens in new tab), "The exact moment of impact of the accident will not be depicted. "
Asked about his portrayal of the show in an interview with Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab), Debicki said Morgan approaches scenes with sensitivity.
"I can tell you that Peter and the whole crew on this job, as well as the actors, really do their utmost to handle everything with subtlety and truth and complexity.
"The amount of research and care and conversation and dialogue that goes on over things that, from a viewer's perspective, you probably would never even notice, is just immense. From my first meeting [with Peter], I knew I had stepped into a space where this work was being taken seriously with deep compassion. That is my experience with this show.".Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a surprise red carpet appearance. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted at the premiere of the music biopic "...
