Andrew Morton says Princess Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, was "like being with a ghost"
Princess Diana has an expert: Andrew Morton, author of the shocking 1992 biography of Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, Diana: Her True Story-In Her Own Words, who plays Princess Diana in season 5 of Netflix's The Crown, Elizabeth Debicki, said she played the role brilliantly. [Morton told ITV's Good Morning Britain, "It was like being in the room with Princess Diana. 'I was floored by Elizabeth Debicki and her portrayal of Princess Diana. I don't say this lightly, but that performance really conveyed the Diana I got to know for several years in the early 1990s." Debicki added, "She gave a Golden Globe-worthy performance there."
The storyline of Morton co-writing the book with Diana will appear in Season 5 Episode 2, which was released Wednesday on the streaming service. According to The Independent, Morton secretly conducted interviews with the late Princess Diana in the early 1990s through a series of tape recordings with her help. These tape recordings were used to write his book, which, not surprisingly, became a huge bestseller.
Morton told Good Morning Britain that the "attention to detail" in The Crown was "astonishing" and that he was "shocked to see the episode about me. The paper I typed the book on was the same paper. The typeface was the same. Morton added, "It really surprised me."
He added that the 1990s were a "difficult time" for the royal family and that "there was no escaping it." Regarding his book, he said the experience empowered the princess and "for the first time in her life she was in control of the narrative."
"When I first got to know her, she was pretty desperate to get her story out there, so much so that she thought she could write and publish a book within a week," Morton said. 'I could feel her desperation to get her message out to the wider world.'
Debicki captured Diana's essence, Morton told The Daily Beast, "It was like being back in her room 30 years ago. It was unnerving. It was like being with a ghost. It spoke to me very clearly."
Morton also said, "It was like being back in her room 30 years ago.
He also told the magazine that the scene in which his office was ransacked actually happened, and that Diana's room was "cleaned for bugs" as in season 5 of the series.
"Writing that book was the royal version of 'The President's Men. Writing that book was the same as writing 'The President's Men. From the first moment I heard the tape, I was very attentive. I remember standing at the edge of the subway platform going home. That secret circle knew the truth about Diana's life, and many in power did not want that truth to come out.
