Shocker: There was more royal drama in the 1990s than "The Crown" Season 5 captured.

Season 5 of Netflix's "The Crown - Camillagate" is packed with a lot of drama.Annus horribilis. panorama and Martin Bashir. Andrew Morton's book--somehow, the turbulent 1990s in the royal family were so dramatic that there was actually some real-life drama left over that could not be contained in the 10-episode season.

Perhaps most striking to the author was that Prince Harry's character barely appeared in Season 5 (a very brief appearance in the first episode, one photo mid-season, and that was about it), even though Prince William's character had ample air time. Yes, William is a little over two years older than his brother, but the sons of Prince Charles and Princess Diana have often been a package deal over the past decade. (Harry and his wife Meghan Markle signed a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix in 2020.) Consider.

We saw the Camillagate (or Tampongate, whatever you want to call it) phone hacking scandal this season, but actually Diana also had a phone hacking scandal in 1992. According to the New York Post, in 1992, The Sun published a transcript of an intimate 23-minute conversation in which Jill Bay called Diana by her pet name of "Squidgy." In that conversation, Diana compared her marriage to a character on the popular British soap opera EastEnders, raised concerns that she might be pregnant, and discussed the deterioration of her marriage to her husband Charles Prior to Camillagate, which occurred in 1993 The Ika-gate incident occurred.

Also skipped was Charles and Diana's February 1992 tour of India. On this tour, the famous photo was taken of Diana sitting alone in front of the Taj Mahal, a monument to her husband's love. (This, of course, also reflected the married life of the Welsh couple at the time.) Anwar Hussein, who photographed the princess, told "People. She was very wise. The image of the solitary and contemplative Princess Diana sitting alone in front of the monument to her love is particularly jarring when juxtaposed with the image of her son Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton sitting together in the same spot 24 years later, in 2016.

Because the season began in 1991 and ended in July 1997, it also overlooks Diana's many philanthropic activities, including her iconic tour of Angola's minefields in January 1997, during which she wore a bulletproof helmet and vest. (Her second son, Prince Harry, also replicated this mother figure by walking the same course himself 22 years later in 2019.)

Diana's relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan is introduced throughout the season, but the depth of their 1997 breakup is not mentioned. This breakup traumatized the late Princess of Wales and ultimately led to where season 5 ends - Diana agreeing to join Mohammed al-Fayed's yacht for a summer vacation. As far as Diana's romantic relationships are concerned, "The Crown" has covered Charles and Camilla's affair extensively, but has barely mentioned Diana's own affair.

Also in 1991, E.News reported that 8-year-old William was struck by a golf club at boarding school and suffered severe head trauma requiring two days of hospitalization. Diana never left her son's side and was in a private room at the hospital. Meanwhile, Prince Charles reportedly stayed at the hospital for only 42 minutes, and negative reports included headlines such as "What Kind of Dad Are You."

It has also been omitted since the 1990s. Mention has been made of their romance, but it has been omitted, as well as the small wedding of Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Lawrence in Scotland in December 1992 (only 30 people attended), a prank call made to the Queen by a Canadian radio station in October 1995 (E. News reported that the Queen had been on the phone with radio DJ spent seven minutes on the phone with Pierre Brassard, who was posing as then-Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. The tour proved so bad that it led to the couple's separation shortly after (see above).

The 1990s were not calm waters for our beloved royal family.
