Winter 2022-2023 Trends Tweak the Classics
In recent seasons, designers have expressed their respect for traditional fashion. It's comforting to turn to styles we know and trust. White tank tops (one of fall's forefront trends (opens in new tab)) never disappoint, nor do classic miniskirts: above-the-knee hemlines will surely send a flirty message. The winter 2022-2023 trend shows a similar appreciation for timeless favorites. White button-ups with maximum flair, denim blazers with just the right amount of shine, and party-ready sequins that can be worn to an early morning Sunday brunch all encourage us to step out of our comfort zone (if only slightly) in the coming season.
We've picked out some of the best winter trends from the 2023 resort season that you'll be seeing all over the place once fall is gone. Scroll down to take a look.
Behold, the industrious and humble white button-down shirt (opens in new tab). It was, is, and will always be a wardrobe staple, and for winter 2022-2023, designers transformed basics with inspired, out-of-the-box designs. Tory Burch offered squiggle collars and fit-and-flare silhouettes, while Prabal Gurung opted for voluminous ruffles. The Row, led by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, took a tongue-in-cheek approach to the age-old oxford shirt with exaggerated lapels and sleeves that reached down to the calf.
The sparkle and shine of what could be called a modern-day Roaring Twenties party has been almost constant in the collections of the past few seasons. And Winter 2022-2023 will be no exception, with designers insisting that glitter is no longer just for when the sun goes down. From Chanel's metallic bombers to Jil Sander's shiny thigh-high heels and gold sequins paired with Valentino's baggy denim, the daytime disco mood is not only acceptable for the season ahead, but not only acceptable but recommended.
As TikTok guru Mandy Lee (aka @oldloserinbrooklyn) predicted earlier this year, fashion's obsession with the early 2000s is fading and giving way to a 2010s style revival. However, according to Resort 2023, a consolidated trend will emerge in winter that features style codes such as twee A-line silhouettes, mary janes, ballet flats, and Peter Pan colors, but with a more moody finish. Look for gothic mini-dresses with cute collars from Coach and Anna Sui, and dark peplum frocks from Proenza Schouler, like Jess from New Girl holding a prescription for Prozac and always oozing wing liners. Vintage-inspired pieces with the attitude of a hungover hipster. It's like Indie Sleazy combined with girly tweezers, or as we like to call them, tweezers. [For the winter of 2023, forget the Canadian tuxedo of yesteryear, and let tailored suits and donned denim take center stage in the trend. From Jonathan Simkhai's nipped-in blazers to Sportmax's eccentric puff-sleeved jackets, iconic Americana materials are given a more sophisticated feel through thoughtful construction. ChloƩ's Creative Director Gabriela Hirst is fully committed to this bit, with medium-wash jeans, denim vests, and matching topcoats.
What's your ideal party dress? For winter 2022-2023, your answer should be shirred and gathered. Designers are all over the place with shirring, combining intricate, eye-catching details with soft femininity. Victoria Beckham opted for asymmetrical shirring, while AZ Factory and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini opted for a front-and-center gathered effect that accentuated the model's natural silhouette.
