Both Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle remain empty after the Queen's death.

The absence of the late King, who died on September 8, is constantly felt, including within the walls of the two royal palaces where she spent nearly her entire adult life. Both Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle are currently vacant and will likely remain so as there are no plans for the royal family to occupy them in the near future. (The Queen lived at Buckingham Palace during her reign until the pandemic began, when she moved to Windsor Castle.)

Marie Claire reported yesterday that Prince Charles may not move into Buckingham Palace, but certainly not until the renovations are completed in 2027. The King has lived at Clarence House near the Palace for many years, and although Lady Camilla and the Queen do not live there, the King has worked at the Palace and hosted events there, and will continue to do so.

In addition, "Marie Claire" recently reported that Prince William and Princess Kate will eventually move to Windsor Castle, but they just moved their family to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate in early September, and the three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, who have had a tumultuous start to the fall They reportedly have no plans to move in the near future, as they do not want to cause any more upheaval for their children.

Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where the late queen died at the age of 96, is set to be opened to tourists and will not be a permanent home for the royal family, The Sun reports. According to the paper, the Queen traveled between Buckingham Palace during the week and Windsor Castle on weekends. The Queen spent summers at Balmoral and winter holidays at Sandringham (also an empty house).

The Sun reported, "The vacancy of Windsor Castle has opened up the possibility of Prince Harry and Meghan (Markle) moving to Windsor Castle if they decide to return to England. (Frogmore is also on the grounds of Windsor.)

A source told the magazine, "It was previously said that William and Kate would move to Windsor Castle, but they have no plans to leave Adelaide Cottage."

Strictly speaking, the Sussexes are free to move into their new English mansion, having paid back the £2.4 million they spent on the Frogmore renovation. Is that a possibility?
