Who will inherit the Queen's vast jewelry collection?
From Queen Camilla to Princess Charlotte, the women of the Royal Family paid tribute to the Queen through jewelry last week. Kate Middleton wore a pearl choker that once belonged to Her late Majesty, while Meghan wore pearl and diamond drop earrings given to her by the Queen when they first got engaged in 2018, the same year Meghan married into the royal family.
According to the Daily Express, the "lion's share" of the queen's vast jewelry collection will be presented to the new crown princess, Kate, but according to the paper, Camilla will be the first to receive them." The late monarch owned an impressive collection of jewelry worth billions of pounds." With her death, these will be passed on to the woman who will later ascend to the throne and other members of the royal family." (The current queen is Camilla, but Kate will follow.)
In typical Queen Elizabeth II fashion, everything down to the jewelry plans was "sorted and organized by the queen some time ago," says Ingrid Sward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine.
"Her late Majesty's personal jewelry was given to various members of the family, and it is likely that the future queen, the crown princess, will receive the bulk of it."
Some pieces "would remain for the use of the reigning monarch's wife, in this case Camilla," says Sward. A large collection would be needed to support her constitutional role."
Royal family expert Katie Nicole, still in typical royal fashion, explains that "there is a hierarchy to all of this. The Queen Consort is the first to have access to the Queen's jewelry. Then after that is the Princess of Wales, and of course Kate. The Duchess of Sussex will eventually come in to buy jewelry, but she is further down the pecking order."
As for the necklace Kate wore at the Queen's funeral, it was first lent by the Queen in 2017 and was a piece commissioned by the Queen using pearls given by the Japanese government after the late Majesty's first official visit to Japan in 1975." The Express reported that "pearls are often referred to as mourning jewelry, and the tradition is said to date back to Queen Victoria's time."
Speaking of Queen Victoria, Camilla wore a Hesse Diamond Jubilee Brooch to Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. Charlotte, who was only seven years old, also paid her respects to the Queen through jewelry. She wore a small diamond horseshoe brooch, a gift from her great-grandmother, in honor of the late Majesty's lifelong love of horses.
