What the Royal Couple's Wedding Cake Says About Them: Experts

When it comes to royal families, everything is left to chance.

This is perhaps especially true for extravagant weddings and receptions, which always include an elaborate wedding cake.

These sweets represent several things: the royal couple's status, their personal preferences, and the image they want to present to the public as man and woman.

Darren Stanton, a body language expert, believes that the royal wedding cake tells us a lot about who the couple is, and he was kind enough to share his views with Marie Claire on behalf of Coffee Friend (opens in new tab).

"Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's cake was designed very differently from most traditional wedding cakes," says Stanton, "flavored with lemon and elderflower, covered with buttercream, and even using flowers for decoration. [This modernity reflects the partnership that Harry and Meghan share.

"Some were reminiscent of spring, and of course they tied the knot in May.

"Perhaps Meghan wanted to convey this through the wedding cake as much as through what she chose for her wedding dress, as it was simple, yet beautiful and unique. It has a bold simplicity, which is similar to her own personality."

"To me, this cake doesn't feel right in that it looks stiff and quite formal, reflecting Prince Charles' behavior towards Diana at the time," says Stanton.

"The cake made at the Royal Naval Culinary Institute lacked taste, imagination, and passion, and this is probably true of their subsequent relationship."

"Prince William and Kate Middleton had a wonderful eight-tier cake that was very, very traditional, which definitely speaks to their personalities," Stanton explains. They are very family oriented people who love a sense of tradition, and it speaks to their desire to be progressive and yet carry on much of the Queen's legacy"

.

"Their behavior shows that they are both still very conventional and grounded in their approach to their royal duties.

"The bigger and more expensive the cake, the more powerful the person ordering the cake wants to appear," Stanton hypothesizes.

"At 9 feet tall and weighing 500 pounds, this huge cake reflected Princess Elizabeth's social status.

"The cake obviously had to reflect the occasion, so much in common can be seen in the grandeur of Queen Elizabeth's attitude and behavior toward her role.

"Perhaps the height of the cake represents her husband, Prince Philip.

"Prince Charles' and Camilla's cakes were not multi-tiered, just simple in their construction, which I thought was a very traditional yet elegant and individual choice," says Stanton.

"When I attend events with Prince Charles, I am keen to wear white and cream, so it is reminiscent of much of what Camilla is wearing now, plus I think the simplicity speaks to the fact that the couple did not want their wedding to be a big event."

"Compared to many royal weddings, it was of a modest nature.

"The cake overall reflects the fact that the couple really wanted a simple wedding and did not want to draw too much attention to the grand affair.
