Queen Elizabeth's signature on the new coin is beautiful and symbolic
After overseeing the monarchy for 70 years, some honor is deserved. But perhaps none is more beautiful and symbolic than Irish artist and illustrator Patrick James (P.J.) Lynch's design of a limited edition £5 coin with Queen Elizabeth's signature front and center.
The iconic "Elizabeth R" has appeared on cards and documents, both official and celebratory, for decades.
The three sets of coins produced by the Royal Mint (open in new tab) all bear the Queen's signature and, as inscribed at the top of each coin, focus on specific aspects of her life as Queen: "The Queen's bestowal of Honors," "Her Charity and Patronage," and "Her Commonwealth." The focus is on.
But as Lynch explained to The Telegraph, the Queen's signature represents more than her power: "She always shakes hands, and uses them when she does symbolic tasks such as awarding prizes, planting trees, and unveiling plaques. It is a way of communicating with hundreds, if not thousands, of people at the same time."
And really, who has a more symbolic wave than the Queen?
This simplicity in design allows the magnitude of all that the Queen has accomplished during her reign to take center stage. It is a fitting tribute to the Queen's platinum jubilee year, an honor so rare that only a handful of monarchs worldwide have achieved it.
"Books can be used for hundreds of years, but coins are thousands of years old. Coins tell a lot about their time." Indeed, few eras have had as great an impact as the time of Elizabeth.
