Niche skin care for niche skin needs
In beauty, as in fashion, one-size-fits-all is outdated. In that spirit, niche skincare brands are developing products and ingredients for special skin types. Read on to find the brand that's right for you.
Don't be scared, but menopause can cause the hormones in your body to fluctuate like crazy as much as 10 years before your periods stop completely. In other words, as early as in your 40s, the decrease in collagen production and estrogen levels can begin to cause changes such as dry, sagging skin, uneven coloration, and acne. After experiencing hot flashes for the first time, Rochelle Weitzner, founder of Paws Well Aging, decided not simply to help women adjust to these new symptoms, but to incorporate a more positive goal of "well aging" rather than "anti-aging," and the brand The company launched.
Some of the skincare lines are upscale, while others are designed for women of color. Founder Ozof Addo, who grew up in Nigeria, creates all of her products with ingredients sourced primarily from Africa to address issues common to dark-skinned women, such as hyperpigmentation.
Skin Fix began when founder (and eczema sufferer) Amy Risley discovered a balm that had been created by a pharmacist in Yorkshire, England in 1870 and had been healing locals for years. She bought the rights to the formula, made improvements, and used it as the inspiration for a series of products that treat problems such as eczema and rosacea without the use of additives (such as synthetic fragrances) that could aggravate already sensitive skin.
If you are prone to allergies, you may be familiar with urticaria. However, even if one does not have urticaria, one's skin can still feel sensitive. Suffering from chronic urticaria, Pai founder Sarah Brown created this brand to address the side effects of allergies and nourish sensitive skin free of potential irritants.
Many common skin care ingredients are not compatible with cancer treatments. For example, drying acids can dehydrate damaged skin and cause cracks that are prone to infection, and certain antioxidants can inhibit the effectiveness of certain cancer cell-killing drugs. Lindy Skin, founded by cancer survivor Lindy Snyder, avoids these potentially harmful ingredients and concentrates on treatment-specific solutions, such as cooling wraps to ease the discomfort of radiation burns and body lotions to rehydrate dry skin from cancer treatment.
Founded in 2004 by four mothers, Mama Mio has developed a cult following by caring for pregnant women who desire skin care. While Tummy Love Butter was the catalyst for the line's popularity, packed with nourishing butters and oils that improve the elasticity of the belly, breasts, and hips, other lines address the unique needs of pregnant women that are often ignored by mainstream brands. There are also postpartum products that address concerns such as sagging thighs and sore nipples from breastfeeding.
