Meghan and Harry rushed the big announcement because the tabloids found out.
Oh, this makes so much sense! Details are coming out about what happened between Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and the rest of the royal family. And it's even more troubling than I had anticipated.
According to several sources, the drama began when Harry called Prince Charles over the Christmas vacations and suggested this new possibility. Prince Charles asked for a "written proposal" and the Queen explained that Harry needed his father's approval before he could sign it.
Harry apparently sent a first draft (open in new tab) and asked for a summit meeting when the couple was in Vancouver on vacation last month, but the Queen denied this and said Harry needed to talk more with his father. The Queen forbade Harry from making a formal announcement at this stage. The family had planned to discuss the matter in late January. 5]
Later, as The New York Times first reported,
"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sniffed out internal discussions about their status at The Sun, a tabloid owned by Rupert Murdoch, and were preparing a story. Upon learning of this, they felt compelled to make their plans public as soon as possible."
Two people connected to the family said.
If these reports are to be believed, Harry only told one member of the royal family of his plans to make the announcement. He told William 10 minutes before the announcement (below).
Amazing.
