Billy Porter Wears Hand-Painted Butterfly Body Art at Critics Circle Awards to Honor Transgender Community
If you walk the red carpet, you already know that Billy Porter (opens in new tab) is going to make that carpet a lot more exciting. And the future EGOT winner (give him an Oscar already) did just that in a silk jumpsuit designed by Hogan McLaughlin (opens in new tab) at the Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday. Porter's chest and arms were adorned with kaleidoscopic temporary butterfly tattoos, the work of Anna Bernabe (opens in new tab).
Porter explained the inspiration for the tattoos on Instagram." The hand-painted butterfly tattoo by @heyannabee continues my 2020 theme of breaking free from the shackles of masculinity and fluttering free." Like the beautiful women of @poseonfx, we are often born into one stage of life and then cocooned in an incubation egg of self-discovery, transformation, and acceptance before finally being set free as beautiful creatures."
In an interview with "Entertainment Tonight," Porter said (opens in new tab):" The butterfly is a symbol of the transgender community and how we are born from a cocoon, born as one thing and then transformed into another." He continued, " So I wanted to honor my peeps tonight."
Meanwhile, the overall look was "inspired by David Bowie's free-spiritedness and the disco era of the 1970s," Porter said on Instagram. Styled by Sam Ratelle (open in new tab), with custom Coach boots, silver jewelry by Lynn Ban (open in new tab), and Vanessa Sanchez McCullough's (open in new tab) work, his neon, glass detailing nails must be noted. After seeing the red carpet, Billy Porter shut it down.
