Taylor Swift Forgives Nicky Glazer's Body-Shaming Comments in "Miss Americana"
Taylor Swift's (open in new tab) Netflix documentary "Miss Americana" (open in new tab) features, among many other things, a montage of the hate the singer has endured over the years. One of the voices in the montage is that of comedian Nicky Glazer (open in new tab), who criticized Taylor's body (open in new tab) and called her "too skinny."
On Friday (the day his documentary was released on Netflix), Glaser took to Instagram to clarify his role in the documentary, explaining the context of his comments and how they were informed by her own struggle with anxiety and eating disorders, apologized for any distress she may have caused Taylor (opens in new tab).
Here is her full message:
I love @taylorswift. Unfortunately, I am featured in her new documentary as part of a montage of idiots saying mean things about her to explain why she felt the need to escape the spotlight for a year. Anyone who knows me knows that I am uncomfortably obsessed with her and her music. When I watched this movie last week alone in bed (it was right after it came out and I was so excited!) ), I heard my own voice in the trailer for the first time and was horrified. She's too skinny, and it bothers me: ...... All her modeling friends are like, "Hey, come on!" I'm like, "Hey!""? This quote should be used as an example of "projection" in a PSYCH101 textbook. Anyone who knows even a little bit about my "work" will know that I have been candid about my struggle with an eating disorder of some sort for the past 17 years. I was probably jealous that day because I "felt fat". Also, I have been told similar things before about being too skinny, and I know how horrible it is to hear that when you are suffering. Besides, I was bothered by her model friend because I wanted to be her friend and I am not a model. I don't really need to post this other than to apologize to someone who really means a lot to me. I only received a couple of death threats from Swift's rabid fans. So while I'm considering being a "die in a hole, you son of a bitch," I'd like for this to reach her somehow, and for her to know that I'm sorry for the pain I caused her, and that I hope to be her friend someday (when I start modeling), and that her music will be a part of my life and I hope to tell her how much her music has influenced my life and my comedy. In fact, her song "The Man" is the inspiration for my new hour-long material, which I feature over and over again during my current tour. Tay, I love you! Can't wait to watch 99.97% of your new doc! #missamericana ❤️?
Glazer got her wish. Taylor saw this post (opens in new tab) and wrote her own message of support in the comments:
Wow. One of the major themes of this document is that we have the ability to change our opinions, grow and learn about ourselves over time. I am so sorry to hear that you are struggling with the same things I am. Sending you a big hug...?
Fans were (understandably) touched by this classy and productive exchange. Could we have more opportunities like this in the future?
