Kim Kardashian's SKIMS line officially launched at Nordstrom
Reality star-turned-business mogul Kim Kardashian West has launched countless successful projects, from her KKW makeup line to Kimoji to the many collaborations she has participated in, but her latest project, SKIMS, is one of the most exciting to date: launching in September 2019 for the first time as a direct-to-consumer label (open in new tab), the brand is now partnering with Nordstrom to create shaping garments, lounge pieces, sleepwear to even more Kardashian fans.
I was particularly excited to see if I could get my hands on the adult version of North West's white fuzzy outfit (opens in new tab) (the full look is sold out on the SKIMS website, I checked), but Nordstrom is now offering Solutionwear and FitsEverybody Underwear, and only carries accessories like body tape and pasties. However, additional products will be released monthly in stores and online!
To celebrate the launch of SKIMS, I had the opportunity to chat with Kim for a few minutes (3 to be exact) at the Nordstrom store in New York City. Waiting my turn to meet Kim Kardashian, I entered the stylist lounge on the third floor of the store, sitting casually on a couch eleven feet away. He was there to support his wife's important announcement. Not long after I had fully processed this sequence of scenes, I found myself sitting in the plush chair across from Kim, staring into her chocolate brown cat-like eyes and asking about the difficulties of creating shapewear.
"It's not that easy," Kim tells me. 'The thickness of the fabric, the elasticity, the transparency, whether it should be high-waisted or not. All of our materials are also custom woven just for us."
What sets SKIMS apart from other brands is that all products are seamless; Kim hates to see seams under garments.
"For example, what I wanted to make super-specific [for SKIMS] is that most [shapewear] usually comes straight down [to the legs], but my stuff comes out just a little bit so there's no bulge in the legs," Kim says, reflecting on her experience. It took a lot of engineering and testing to get it to work, not just on my body type, but on everyone's body type from XXS to 5X."
SKIMS now offers Solutionwear in sizes XXS through 4X and 5X. (Solutionwear has 31 different cups and nine shades.) All of these selections are for women, but there are rumors that Kim is starting SKIMS for men (opens in new tab). Despite all this, the entrepreneur shows no signs of slowing down.
"My experience has taught me that if you want to get things done, you have to do it yourself," she says. But even a busy person like Kim knows when to slow down. She says, "In order to get things done, you have to take time for yourself, for your own sanity. You have to be disciplined, clear out the people in your life, not be at every party, be available to everyone. It's okay to be selfish. You have to make those choices if you want to be successful." No one said dating Kim would be easy.
