Why Beyonce is Missing from the 2020 Oscars
Well, I'm reviewing Brad Pitt's BAFTA acceptance speech (opens in new tab), read on behalf of Margot Robbie, for the 92nd Academy Awards, aka the Oscars, and I suddenly realized: will Beyoncé be at the Oscars? Because, frankly, no awards ceremony is complete without an appearance by Beyonce.
Sadly, Beyoncé was not nominated (in my opinion) for Best Original Song for "Spirit" from the live-action film "The Lion King," despite the fact that she was nominated for the award. Slim, in other words, ...... It means it doesn't exist. Which means we probably won't see iconic moments like the time she and Jay-Z snuck in through a side door with a bottle of champagne at the 2020 Golden Globes (opens in new tab).
Also, since the nominees for Best Original Song usually perform their nominated songs during the show, her absence means she will miss the live performance of "Spirit" during the show. The last time Bey performed at an awards ceremony was at the 81st Academy Awards in 2009 with host Hugh Jackman, and before that she performed a tear-jerking medley with Jennifer Hudson in 2007.
You've shed at least one tear, right?
It's unclear what Beyonce will do instead on Sunday night, but she was spotted at Columbia University in New York City on Wednesday. The Grammy-winning artist attended the Sean "Jay Z" Carter lecture series (open in new tab), and her husband spoke with "New Yorker" professor and writer Jelani Cobb.
The collective gasp from the crowd as they realized she had entered... It was a perfect mood.
