The lyrics to The Weeknd's "After Hours" seem to be about his breakup with Bella Hadid.

Late last night, The Weeknd released the third single from his upcoming album After Hours.

There is some evidence that Bella Hadid, The Weeknd's ex-girlfriend from a breakup, was the inspiration for the lyrics My hearts belong to you / I'll risk it all for you I won't just leave / This time , lyrics like "I'll never leave" seem to suggest that he has broken up before but now wants to make a serious commitment to Hadid.

Even when they were last dating, The Weeknd was contemplating marriage to Hadid; in November 2018, Us Weekly reported (opens in new tab) that The Weeknd was ready to put a ring on it, and a source said the two were "madly They claim that they are "madly in love" and that a proposal is "imminent. Hadid and The Weeknd will separate in August 2019 (opens in new tab).

The Weeknd may have even mentioned his relationship with Selena Gomez in the bridge. He sings, " I know it's all my fault / Made you put down your guard / I know I made you fall / I said you were wrong for me / I lied to you, I lied to you, I lied to you (To you) / Can't hide the truth, I stayed with her in spite of you / You did some things that you regret, still right for you / 'Cause this house is not a home."

The Weeknd and Hadid originally broke up in November 2016. He began dating Gomez in January 2017 (opens in new tab). The Weeknd and Gomez made headlines for unfollowing Hadid on Instagram (opens in new tab), and she eventually unfollowed them (opens in new tab).

Hadid also spoke out (opens in new tab) to Teen Vogue in February 2017, shortly after The Weeknd and Gomez went public with their relationship, about how hard it was to go through a breakup." It was my first breakup, or my second breakup after the horse, and a very public one," she said. 'As an outsider, you might think I handled it very well, but it's always been in my heart and it's always felt very heavy. It's hard for a while. Love hurts, but you have to get over it."

"I will always respect him and I will always love him," she continued."

"Sometimes it's tempting to be sad about it and deal with it differently, but at the end of the day, you don't want to burn the bridges you fought so hard to build.

Gomez and The Weeknd ended their relationship in October 2017; in November, The Weeknd was spotted hanging out (open in new tab) at Hadid's apartment again; by summer 2018, he and Hadid were (open in new tab) again. They moved in (opens in new tab) together that fall. And almost a year later, they ended things again.

Hadid and The Weeknd are currently on good terms, though. He attended her birthday party in October 2019, and some news outlets reported (opens in new tab) that the two are back together again. A representative for The Weeknd denied this (opens in new tab) and said he was "just there as a friend." Since then, the two have not been photographed out and about.

But that may not mean that The Weeknd is not still hopeful about a future with Hadid. A source told E. (opens in new tab) in August 2019 that both are hoping for an eventual reconciliation then: "They hope to get back together at some point, but right now they are focused on themselves and their projects." And the lyrics to "After Hours" show much evidence that The Weeknd may still be pining for that future with Hadid. Below are the lyrics to the song. The song can also be heard below.

Verse 1 I thought I'd die in my dreams again (Baby, almost died) (I couldn't breathe again I can't breathe again Fallin' in smoothly without you My heart belongs to you I'll risk it all for you I won't just leave I won't just leave this time I want to share my baby I don't need protection Your body next to mine It's just a memory I'm falling into a sleep too deep I can't sleep without you I'm fine on my own I can't breathe without you Verse 2 My darkest hour Girl, I felt so alone in this crowded room Different girls on the floor distracted me from my thoughts of you I became the person I once was. I drift off to sleep To be closer to you in my dreams I didn't want to wake up without you next to me I just wanted to call you and say Chorus. Oh, baby Where are you now? I would have given everything to hold you in my arms I'm sorry I broke your heart Verse 3 I never got through I was running away from reality I spent all my time daydreaming Spending money to make amends 'Cause I want you, baby 'Cause when I'm inside you, I'm in heaven Waking up beside you was definitely a blessing I'll never let you down again Chorus. Oh, baby Where are you now? I'd give everything I have to hold you I'm sorry I broke your heart I told you, baby I'll be nicer to you than ever before I'll hold you and never let go This time, I won't break your heart, I won't break your heart Bridge. It's my fault I know I made you fall I know I made you fall You're not like me I lied, lied, lied (to you) I can't hide the truth I stayed with her in spite of you You're sorry and you're right Cause this house ain't no home Chorus. Without my baby Where are you now? I gave everything I had to hold you I'm sorry I broke your heart And I said, baby I'll be nicer to you than ever before I'm gonna hold you and I'm not gonna let go This time I won't break your heart, I won't break your heart
