Chasten Glezman, husband of Mayor "Pete" Battygig, is super supportive.

Pete Batigieg, aka "Mayor Pete," is the only millennial candidate in the 2020 race and, if elected, would be the youngest president in US history. He is openly gay and married to husband Chasten Glezman (open in new tab) (he currently goes by Chasten Batigieg on social media). It's not hard to see why: as a veteran and scholar, Pete is charismatic and smart. (Opens in new tab)

Given the Trump administration's retreat on LGBTQ+ rights in the US (Mike Pence, I'm looking at you), a same-sex couple in the White House would be nothing short of glorious. Here's everything you need to know about Chastain, the first ever "First Gentleman" nominee.

Throughout their campaign, the Battygigs have met many people who feel supported and loved by a message that Chastain sums up this way: "You belong. You belong. You are loved. You are here. (There is also an educational aspect, as in this video for National Coming Out Day about the different experiences and perspectives of those involved in the Batty Gig 2020 campaign: [Pete, like Chasten, also shares his coming out story (below). Coming Out, Meeting Chasten, and Marriage (heart eye emoji).

So the two have built an inclusive space, not only personally but also professionally. And of course, there are the adorable photos of Chasten and Pete traveling together, loved by people from all walks of life:

I'm not crying (I'm totally crying).

According to their New York Times (open in new tab) wedding announcement, 29-year-old Chasten is "a middle school teacher at Montessori Academy near Mishawaka, Indiana." He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master's degree in education from nearby DePaul University. He teaches humanities and theater and is apparently super-loved by the kids.

Since Pete announced his candidacy, he and her husband have been in and out of the campaign, but Chastain still takes the opportunity to talk to students:

According to Pete, no matter what happens in 2020, the two are thinking about their future. "I've obviously thrown a wrench into our short-term plans," he told People (open in new tab)." Whatever happens, I think the next chapter of our personal lives will be about our children."

Honestly, watching these two become parents for the first time makes my heart melt. Pete said he is "really excited" to be a father and that "Chasten is especially made to be a great parent."

As for the time frame, he said, "I hope to be [a dad] soon. He added, "One way or another."

"It's going to be after the election.

Chastain does improv comedy and, comically, is much more outgoing than his "shy" partner Pete (interesting given the latter's choice of profession and, well, the fact that he is running for president). As a result, he not only supports his partner from the shadows, but has successfully risen to the role of "first man candidate."

"I don't think he's someone who felt politics was for him or sought out the world of celebrity. But I think he's such a charming, wonderful person that people naturally gravitate to him."

The Democratic primaries are finally underway. After New Hampshire and Iowa, Pete and Bernie Sanders are doing the best (open in new tab). Pete apparently did particularly well among "moderate/realist" Democratic voters. It will be an interesting race as the candidates move across the country.

It is also worth noting that Pete made history in Iowa: he is the first openly gay candidate to win delegates at a major party national convention. Gay rights advocates say this is of great significance and represents an important evolution.

Chastain reported a flurry of activity in New Hampshire:

and despite the obstacles (Chastain's spoke of his difficulty in dealing with the prejudice and even slander shouted at him), he still seems to be pumping and protecting his fans:

And of course, their dog is very supportive of his father, encouraging fans to vote for him in the cutest way imaginable:

(It's so cute.)

Both are from the Midwest and bonded over their shared love of local food on their first date in September 2015. Pete says, "When I saw he was into Scotch eggs, I knew it was a go."

"I had been in a few relationships, and it had been a few years since my last," Chastain added. I wanted to meet someone I could actually go on dates with, with the goal of a long-term relationship."

The two moved in together in 2016, with Chasten commuting to Chicago to finish his degree.

Pete explained (open in new tab)." Chasten did a great job of making things work while I worked late into the night at the office." "He also has a pretty demanding job as a teacher." And when Pete announced his candidacy, Chastain was all aboard:

Apparently (open in new tab), "It was the first time in 40 years that a sitting South Bend mayor had gotten married while in office." both men loved Indiana and the Midwest, and their enthusiasm really showed in their marriage It showed in their marriage. According to the wedding announcement in The New York Times, the wedding featured the following:

See.

In other words,

while Chasten and Pete were on the campaign trail, we had the opportunity to learn more about him. Although Chasten and his parents reconciled, when he first came out, "I don't recall my parents telling me I couldn't live in the house anymore, but they made me believe I had to leave," he explained to the New York Times,

and he was not happy about it.

After the initial conversation, he told The Washington Post (opens in new tab) that he was shuffled around, sleeping on the couch, and ostensibly homeless until his parents finally invited him home. His parents eventually embraced him and walked him down the aisle. His siblings, however, never accepted him.

Trigger warning: sexual assault details. In that same article, he also recounts a horrific but all-too-familiar incident the year after his coming out: he was sexually assaulted "by an acquaintance at a house party. It was another burdensome secret, a truth he feared his friends would not accept. But he was able to accept it, and his husband helped him get back on his feet. Pete was very patient. 'I've never felt so looked after.'

Chastain also admitted that he was exhausted from the campaign and had lost 20 pounds since the vacations. Some of this is due to malice, such as the abuse directed at him and Pete and the vicious letters to his home, but some of it is simply due to the openness of the situation. 'What I end each day feeling is hurt and tired,' he said. 'I'm exposing myself too much. And we have invited the world to scrutinize us.'

We also got some sweet tidbits (opens in new tab): Chasten and Pete met at Hinge, and Pete proposed at Chicago O'Hare Airport. Aww. These two.

Chasten posted this:

Pete even showed a little footage in his campaign video:

They look so sweet and happy. What a year it must have been for the couple, especially for Chasten.

Chasten gave his first interview (opens in new tab) and said (among other things), "I am so happy to carry the torch, to be brave, to be proud, to raise the flag for our community and for everyone. This campaign is love, you are loved and you matter. And we are going to go out and make you guys proud." Really, really great.

CNN (open in new tab) also noted that Pete's momentum is tied to Chasten's rising popularity, with the two appearing at public events; the two also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show:

and the two made the cover of TIME:

It also seems that Chastain is increasingly becoming known in his own right, going out and talking to people without her husband:

Watch this space - more to come from this couple as they continue to make history.
