Kobe Bryant once gave his wife Vanessa a blue dress from The Notebook.
On Monday, February 24, fans, family, and celebrities from Jennifer Lopez to Beyonce (opens in new tab) honored the legacy of Kobe and Gianna Bryant (opens in new tab), who died in a helicopter crash on January 26 that killed nine people, and life, held a memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The memorial service was filled with touching moments, including a moving eulogy by Vanessa, Bryant's wife of 20 years. In her speech, she expressed her love for the man and daughter she holds so dear. The iconic blue dress and platform heels worn by Rachel McAdams and the notebook props from The Notebook.
"I asked her why she chose the blue dress," Vanessa explained, "and she said it was because of the scene where Allie comes back to Noah."
"We wanted to grow old together like in the movie," she added.
She added that Corby is "incredibly romantic" and gives her an anniversary gift every year.
The film's costume designer, Caryn Wagner, later revealed that she had no idea that Corby had given Vanessa a dress.
"I'm starting to cry. I'm still wiping away tears," Wagner told The Hollywood Reporter. (What a beautiful eulogy. I am so honored to have contributed in any way to the history of this wonderful man."
In 2013, Vanessa posted a #ThrowbackThursday Instagram, showing off notes on her dress, shoes, and props, which she said were among her favorite Valentine's Day gifts.
"We had a really great love story," Vanessa continued at Monday's memorial service. 'We loved each other with every fiber of our being. Two perfectly imperfect people who created a beautiful home and raised two lovely, wonderful daughters."
[18The couple first met in 1999, when Vanessa was a back-up dancer for the "G'd Up" music video by the group East Cedars, and Kobe was starting his basketball career.
They were married on April 18, 2001, and had four daughters: natalia Diamante (17), Gianna Maria Honoré (13), Bianca Bella (3), and Capri Corby (7 months).
"God knew they could not be in this world without each other," Vanessa added in her eulogy. 'He had to bring them home to be with us. Take care of our Gigi. I got Nati, Bibi, and Coco, and we are still the best team."
