Beyonce sings her favorite song at Kobe Bryant and Gigi's memorial service
Beyoncé opened today's memorial service in Los Angeles for Kobe and Gianna Bryant and their friends with a moving performance of her songs "XO" and "Halo." In a previously unannounced set, the singer took the stage backed by an orchestra and gospel choir to pay tribute to the father-daughter duo who died in a tragic helicopter crash last month.
"I'm here because I love Corby, and this was one of his favorite songs," she told the audience, interrupting her song, "XO." So I want to redo that one. But I want everyone to do it together and sing it loud enough to hear your love."
Next, Beyonce transitioned into the powerful gospel of "Halo." She was dressed in a gold suit and showed off her purple nails and jewelry, a nod to the team color of Kobe's home NBA team, the L.A. Lakers.
She was also photographed after her performance:
Tributes were paid to the Bryants at the Staples Center today, including a eulogy for Vanessa Bryant, who lost her husband and teenage daughter. She said, "God knew they could not be in this world without each other. God had to take them back to heaven together," she said in a poignant speech (opens in new tab).
Corby and Gigi were two of the nine victims killed in the helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on March 26; they are survived by Vanessa and the couple's three daughters, Natalia, 17; Bianca, 3; and Capri, 8 months.
