Sophie Turner recounts her first date with Joe Jonas
[Romance, fireworks, irresistible chemistry. But perhaps the best part of a good love story is that each is unique. Example A: The story of the unconventional first meeting of Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas (open in new tab). Believe it or not, Sophie was not convinced that Joe would be the man for her. In fact, she thought Joe was going to be a total asshole (her words, not ours)Sophie recalled the details of her and Joe's first meeting in the April 2020 issue of Elle (opens in new tab). It all started when Sophie had a chance meeting with Joe's agent in 2016 and saw a possible connection between the two. "I went to one of the meetings and Joe's agent was in the room. He said, 'You remind me of one of my clients, you two must really hit it off,'" Sophie said.
Later that year, Joe was touring in London with DNCE and decided to get into Sophie's DMs. And since Joe Jonas is a Joe Jonas-level celebrity, Sophie thought he would be super obnoxious and show up at their dive bar hangout with a large team in tow.
"I thought he would show up with security and stuff," Sophie recalled. I thought, 'He's going to be a jerk. ' In the back of my mind, I didn't know if he was a catfish or what, but I was still worried.
Eventually, Joe showed up at the bar with only one person with him. He wanted to have a drink and a good time with the "Game of Thrones" star and her friends. 'He didn't bring security,' she said. He brought his friends and they were drinking just as hard as we were. I remember the two of us spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor. Hours and hours and hours. I was never bored. It wasn't contrived. It wasn't small talk, it was very easy. And soon we were inseparable. I went on tour with him."
Indeed, Joe and Sophie hit it off, but it turned out that she actually hated Joe and the rest of the Jonas Brothers when she was much younger. She said, "My friends and I weren't really fans of the Jonas Brothers. There was a band in England called Busted. They had a hit song called "Year 3000." It was great, and we were big Busted fans. Then the Jonas Brothers covered the song and it was a big hit. Then Busted broke up. I thought it was all the Jonas Brothers' fault. So I hated them."
[Pause for irony.]
Thankfully, that bit of Sophie's past didn't have a huge impact on her and Joe's future: they started dating right after their date, got engaged on their one-year anniversary (opens in new tab), married twice (opens in new tab), and now their first child is about to be born (opens in new tab). I wonder if true love exists!
