Windsor Castle Security Mistake Leads to Awkward Curfew for Queen
You would think that becoming the literal Queen of England (open in new tab) would guarantee access to Windsor Castle (open in new tab), one of the main residences of the Queen of England (open in new tab). But you would be wrong. Even monarchs are susceptible to clumsy and capricious blunders.
On Thursday, Queen Elizabeth (open in new tab) experienced just such a situation when she found herself locked out of her castle. You don't like this, do you?
According to The Sun (opens in new tab), the 93-year-old queen was about to enter the estate in her Range Rover on Thursday when she noticed that the entrance to Nelson's Gate would not open.
Fortunately, Elizabeth was surrounded (as usual) by a large group of guards. Security at Windsor Castle is, as expected, tight.
According to The Sun's (open in new tab) report on the incident (open in new tab): "An exasperated guard apparently kicked the side door in desperation before escorting the queen to the unlocked gate.
"It's very embarrassing," an onlooker at the scene told the British newspaper. 'When the queen turned the corner, the guards should have opened the gate automatically. Either someone forgot to open it or there was no gate guard."
[12Eventually, the queen and her guards (open in new tab) were forced to basically circle the block, like people looking for parking downtown, until someone inside could correct the error and open the gate.
