Meghan Markle Wears Bold Green Dress to Commonwealth Day Service

On Monday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended the Commonwealth Day service (opens in new tab) at Westminster Abbey with the Queen and other royal family members. The bittersweet appearance marks Prince Harry and Meghan's last assignment as active senior royals. The couple did not join the Queen in the procession, but Meghan waved to the cameras as they made their way to the church. The Duchess of Sussex wore an emerald Emilia Wickstead dress with a green fascinator by William Chambers, accessorized with a Gabriella Hirst bag (opens in new tab) and beige heels by Aquazzura. Prince Harry wore a navy suit with green lining (opens in new tab) on the inside and a green tie to match his wife.

As Meghan walked, her dress, with extra fabric hanging down from her neck like a cape, fluttered in the breeze. This prominent detail is one of the reasons why Meghan's fashion is so highly regarded. She is not afraid to opt for a look that is royal-approved but not out of fashion. Kate Middleton, on the other hand, chose to re-wear the red coat (opens in new tab) she wore to the Christmas service at Sandringham in 2018.

This was the third public appearance this week for Meghan, who has spent the past few months primarily in Canada. Previously, Meghan attended the Endeavor Foundation Awards (opens in new tab) (March 5), the Mountbatten Music Festival (March 7), and attended the International Women's Day event (March 8). We're counting all her activities as Duchess of Sussex because, as of March 31, Meghan (and Prince Harry) will officially step down from all royal duties. With that, all the royal rules (open in new tab) about what to wear will cease to exist. Already, we've seen Princess Meghan return to more casual attire (open in new tab), such as leggings and sweaters.

If you missed all the royal family tension in January, here's a quick recap: the two announced on January 8 (open in new tab) that they were "leaving" the royal family and becoming financially independent (open in new tab). Prince Harry and Meghan flew to Canada (opens in new tab). Their dogs moved with them (open in new tab). The royal family was confused and tried to work things out behind the scenes (open in new tab). The Queen seemed to support their resignation (open in new tab) as two active members of the royal family. Prince Harry and Princess Meghan can no longer use their HRH titles (open in new tab). The couple is considering ways to become financially independent (opens in new tab). Prince Harry reportedly had a four-hour lunch/heart-to-heart (opens in new tab) with his grandmother just a week ago. Finally, here's a cute (but old) photo (opens in new tab) of Archie and Prince Harry.
