Actress Zoe Deutch, eye cream from La Mer, shampoo from Costco
Zoe Deutch made her name playing the quirky Infinity Jackson in "The Politician," which was released last fall. But you already know her from her appearances in major feature films like "Vampire Academy" and "Zombieland": you already know her from her roles in major feature films like Or maybe you even go back to her debut in Disney's "Suite Life on Deck". You may also know her star-studded family: film and television director Howard Deutch as her father and actress Leah Thompson as her mother.
But now is the time to get to know her as a beauty ambassador: the 25-year-old is La Mer's latest campaign star, bringing her charisma to The Eye Concentrate (opens in new tab), a new incarnation of the best-selling eye cream. She and I talked for over half an hour about her abiding love of Costco shampoo and conditioner, the ups and downs of hormonal acne, and why she has about 10 Neosporin lip balms. It's no exaggeration to say that she knows all about beauty.
Get the inside scoop on Deutsch's arsenal of beauty and her refreshing thoughts on beauty beyond the superficial below.
"La Mer The Eye Concentrate (opens in new tab) is my secret skincare weapon. There's a reason why most of the makeup artists and skincare colleagues I know say this eye cream is their all-time favorite above all else. It helps diminish dark circles under the eyes and feels so luxurious, soothing, and hydrating when applied to fragile areas. This cream also comes with a stylish applicator, and I love the tool. It leaves my eyes smoother, brighter, and healthier.
The iS Clinical Cream Cleanser (open in new tab) has been very helpful in maintaining clear skin and controlling acne breakouts. I also love using the Warming Honey Cleanser (opens in new tab) once a week because it has good ingredients like glycerin, honey, green tea extract, and papaya enzymes.
I am obsessed with La Mer's Moisturizing Soft Cream (opens in new tab) moisturizer, especially on my forehead, cheeks, and neck. It's so moisturizing and leaves a dewy finish. Anyone who has used it will attest that it makes skin more vibrant and healthy without any parabens or sulfates. For the rest of my face, I use this special moisturizer - EltaMD moisturizer (opens in new tab). It is waterless and works great on very sensitive skin like mine, especially on my chin area.
I found Neosporin Lip Balm (opens in new tab) at CVS when I was at the Sundance Film Festival. Park City, Utah is really high altitude and my lips were super dry, chapped, and sore. The chapstick I had been using did not work. This is a combination of antioxidants and essential lipids, with no parabens or other preservatives. It's been five years now and I can't stop putting it on. It's in my car, in my purse, in my house, in my bed. I'm wearing it right now."
"In addition to using the skin care products I use most often, a really big component is recognizing that hormonal acne comes from within. It's not enough to just use products, you have to know what's going on inside of you. Everyone's mother's saying that beauty comes from within is very true. I use a wellness formula (opens in new tab). I take a lot of vitamins, herbs, antioxidants, oregano oil, minerals, and other immune-boosting and skin-boosting products. I also believe in a very potent probiotic and take a brand called 100 Billion (opens in new tab) once a day."
"I have had hormonal acne since I was 15 and had to come to terms with myself not being able to control it all. Over the past 8 months, I have given up control and figured it out with this roundup of products that actually keep my skin and actually work on me. There is something freeing about not having control over my skin and flare ups. I don't expect myself to be perfect and I don't want others to be either. And if they do, it's none of my business.
After all, my job as an actor is to be relatable. I am not a model, nor should I be. It doesn't matter if I'm not perfect. It's okay to have problems. I just have reached a point of zen. I still get frustrated at times because the hormonal skin problems usually last not just two days, but all month long. But I've finally figured out what works for me."
"I love makeup as much as I love skincare. I use a Japanese brand, Beauty Blender (opens in new tab), and I also love Koh Gen Do face powder (opens in new tab). For mascara, I use MAC's Extended Play Giga Black Lash Mascara (opens in new tab). For eyeshadow, I love mixing Maybelline's Chai Latte eyeshadow palette (opens in new tab) (now discontinued, I bought one at each drugstore in Los Angeles) and Dior's Cool Neutrals from the Backstage eyeshadow palette (opens in new tab). I love mixing them together. For blush, I love Chanel's Golden Sun blush (opens in new tab). For lips, I'm obsessed with all the Charlotte Tilbury colors (open in new tab), especially Pillow Talk (open in new tab) and Dolly Bird (open in new tab).
"Katharine Hepburn really paved the way in this industry. She straddled the lines of conventionally accepted American standards of beauty and fashion while exuding elegance. She was the epitome of beauty and strength, and I still look for that perfect red lip she wore. Blake Lively has also always been incredibly beautiful and has the best hair in the world. I use her beauty as a reference when I'm getting ready for an event, and when I'm done, I'm like, oh shoot, I'm not like Blake Lively. Why am I not Blake Lively?"
"I've been using Kirkland shampoo (open in new tab) and conditioner (open in new tab) from Costco for years. My colorist, Tracy Cunningham, is the best and I also use this Olaplex Hydrating Mask (opens in new tab) from time to time. I'm a fan of Oribe's Dry Texturizing Spray (opens in new tab), the GHD flat iron (opens in new tab), and the T3 curling iron (opens in new tab)."
"What's so funny is that no matter how hard I try, no matter how much effort my Glam team puts into my look, I still look at the pictures and think, wait a minute, did I get something in my teeth? Or, I have weird hair showing. My favorite look is this year's Golden Globes. I was able to work with the Fendi designers to create a custom jumpsuit, and I had an amazing hair stylist and makeup artist. [I truly believe that true beauty comes from within and that a person's beauty is reflected in their soul. Sure, it sounds cheesy, but it's true. After all, no one is full of confidence. The most beautiful people I have met in the whole world are also the least confident. No one is perfect, and it's helpful for me to remember that everyone naturally compares their appearance to that of others. We just have to do our best to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. "
