The Queen is expected to make an unusual televised address on coronavirus

For the fourth time in her nearly 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth is scheduled to deliver a special address to the nation. The televised address, which will take place within the next few weeks, will focus on the pandemic that has struck the United Kingdom and the world. According to The Times (opens in new tab), the Queen is expected to speak to the British public and offer words of encouragement as the coronavirus crisis worsens.

This is the fourth time in history that the Queen has made a special address to the nation. The last time the Queen gave a televised address was in 2002, on the eve of her mother's funeral. Prior to that, she addressed the nation at the death of Princess Diana in 1997 and during the Gulf War in 1991.

Last week, the Queen delivered a personal message to the nation, emphasizing the "pivotal role" the public must play in the COVID-19 crisis.

"We are all encouraged to change our normal routines and patterns of life for the sake of the communities in which we live, especially to protect the most vulnerable among them. At times like these, I am reminded that our nation's history has been built on people and communities coming together, focusing on common goals, and mobilizing their collective efforts."
