Princess Diana's Photographer Says She Is "Heartbroken" by William and Harry's Feud

Whatever one's opinion of the royal family, it is impossible not to be deeply saddened by the growing rift between Prince William and Prince Harry. The two sons of the late Princess Diana admit that they are "on different paths" (opens in new tab) (Harry's words), and the rumored resentment (opens in new tab) between the once close siblings, which reached its peak when Prince Harry retired from the senior royal family with his wife Meghan Markle in January It reportedly culminated in the "hurt" and "disappointment" of William, the Queen, and Prince Charles, and in an interview with Page Six, (opens in new tab) royal photographer Jayne Fincher, who has watched the boys grow up, said Princess Diana "must be heartbroken."

Fincher took some of the late Princess Diana's most iconic photographs (opens in new tab) and published a coffee table book of her favorite shots in 1998. (Open in new tab) She told Page Six: "Princess Diana would have done everything she could to resolve this issue. She would have done everything she could to broker peace. She would have shaken the boys' heads and said, 'Please. What is going on?" She would say. As young children, the two boys "did everything together ...... The boys have been through a lot together," she said.

More than 20 years after Diana's death, both of her sons have shown a deep commitment to keeping her memory alive. Harry said in 2016:(opens in new tab) "We will do everything we can to make sure she is never forgotten and to carry on all the special gifts and other things she had and drew on when she was alive." William clearly shares his sentiments, saying in another 2016 interview (opens in new tab): "I never realized how much influence she had. I applaud her dedication and energy, and I think the contagious enthusiasm and energy she had came through to me." [At William and Kate's wedding, Harry called William "the perfect brother" (opens in new tab) and added that he loved Kate "like a sister." Before Harry formed his own royal family after his marriage, he was very close to the Cambridges and frequently held events with them as a group of three.

There are conflicting reports about William and Harry's current relationship; both are reportedly still deeply hurt (opens in new tab), but there are also reports that they are beginning to try to repair things between them (opens in new tab). Harry is in Canada for now, while William, the future King of England, lives in England.
