Prince Harry "devastated" to give up military title

Today marks Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's last day as senior members of the royal family after announcing their departure in January, ITV reported (opens in new tab) that with Harry's departure from the royal family comes the loss of three military titles: the British Marine Corps General, Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Base Honington, and Honorary Admiral Small Ships and Submarines, Royal Naval Command. Because military appointments are considered official royal business, ITV explains that Harry could only have held these positions if he was an active royalty.

According to The Sun, Harry said he was "devastated" by the loss of his generalship and felt he had no say in the decision. A source at the Mountbatten Music Festival earlier this month told the paper, "He told people he regretted having to step down and said the decision was forced upon him."

"Harry was very upset about the decision,"

"He said he was very upset that he had to step down,"

"He said he was very upset that he had to step down.

"He was apologetic and not entirely nonchalant. He was a serious man and you could see he was upset and emotional because this was his last opportunity to put on his military uniform."

Harry reportedly told military officials, including Major General Matthew Holmes, head of the Royal Marines, that he was "very proud to have served as a Captain in the Royal Marines and devastated to have to step down."

"I feel I have let people down, but I had no choice," Harry said.
