Prince William and Kate Middleton hire former social media manager for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

David Watkins is just 27 years old and was the digital communications leader for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when they were senior royals. The Sussex Royal account will close at the end of March, and more information about Harry and Meghan's new venture, Archewell (opens in new tab), will follow. But in the meantime, according to Watkins' LinkedIn (opens in new tab) and as reported by People (opens in new tab), he is now being scooped up to manage Kate Middleton and Prince William's social accounts.

First of all, it might kill me to have such responsibilities and public appearances at age 27. Second, given that the (now defunct) Sussex royal account has 11.3 million followers, Watkins has clearly done a great job. There was a conspiracy theory circulating on the Internet that Princess Meghan managed the account herself (opens in new tab), but in fact, it appeared as if both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were actively involved. Some birthday wishes and personal messages appeared to have come directly from them.

Overall, it was clear that the account, like other royal accounts, was personal and focused on charitable causes. However, there were also fake text message conversations (opens in new tab), interactive and participatory posts with followers (opens in new tab), and occasional glimpses of Archie (opens in new tab). The "I'm not sure how much of this is a good thing, especially since William, as the future king, has engaged and will continue to engage directly with the people.

I don't know exactly when Watkins started working with the Cambridges, but already their posts (and emojis!) are beginning to take on a slightly more casual tone:
