Jake Gyllenhaal Says Heath Ledger Refused to Make Fun of "Brokeback Mountain" at Oscars

One more reason to miss and cherish Heath Ledger: according to Jake Gyllenhaal, the late actor refused to participate in a homophobic joke about "Brokeback Mountain" in 2005-2006. I remember he wanted to do a joke about Brokeback Mountain at the opening of the Academy Awards that year," Gyllenhaal recalled in a cover interview for the latest issue of Another Man (opens in new tab). And Heath said no. And Heath said no. But Heath said no. It was like, 'I'm not going to do it. And Heath was like, 'It's not a joke to me, it's not a joke to me, it's not a joke to me.'

On the film's 10th anniversary in 2015, Gyllenhaal told NPR (opens in new tab) about the tragedy of Ledger's death in 2008." How unfortunate that I will miss working with him and not being able to see the beauty of his expression."

"I know that not only is this career short-lived and that this and that can happen, but also that life is precious.

"I think losing Heath and being a part of a family that is like a movie, like a movie that we all made together, I think I can see that and appreciate that and hopefully move my feelings from the things that don't really matter to the things that do matter," Gyllenhaal continued. I miss him as a human being."
