Prince Charles invents nickname for Prince George

Queen Elizabeth (opens in new tab) may be "Her Majesty" to most, but to her great-grandchildren, she goes by a simpler (and more endearing) moniker.

Kate Middleton (opens in new tab) shared that adorable tidbit with the world during her first solo interview in 2016, according to The Sun (opens in new tab). At the time, Prince George (opens in new tab) was the only royal kid to use the nickname, though his sister Princess Charlotte (opens in new tab) reportedly uses it now as well.

"George is only two and a half, but we call her 'Gungans,'" Kate explained.

"Whenever we go to stay over, the girls always leave a little gift or something in the room, and it just shows their love for the family."

The origin of this nickname goes back even further in the history of the royal family; according to the Express, it traces its roots to George's grandfather, Prince Charles (opens in new tab).

The paper cites a commemorative brochure from Prince Charles' 1969 investiture ceremony (opens in new tab), which tells the origin of "Gungans."

"The mother spent as much time with her son as her duties permitted, and part of her day was always devoted to him," the brochure said (opens in new tab). He often visited Queen Mary, whom he called Gungans, at Marlborough House, and the Queen, later known as the Queen Mother, at Buckingham Palace."
