Daniel DuBoise, co-founder of Sakara, believes that wellness should not be a luxury.

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?

Danielle DuBoise became aware of her health and diet, and in 2012 she co-founded Sakara Life, a plant-based diet program and wellness company, with her childhood friend Whitney Tingle. Nearly a decade later, the brand has emerged as a major voice in wellness and an editor's favorite for a much-needed reset. Here, DuBoise talks about family, morning routines, and the importance of self-care.

Rise and Shine

The first thing I do when I open my eyes is kiss my children and husband. My child always wakes us up with a smile. It makes it really hard to have a bad day.

Morning Meals

On a perfect morning, I share breakfast with my husband and daughter. I wake up early with a small child and am often not hungry for a few hours. Right now, my favorite thing to do is to make myself a latte with Sakara's Metabolism powder. I make my own almond and coconut milk, mix the milk and powder with a whisk, and pour it into my Canyon coffee. I still get Sakara meals (open in new tab) delivered to my door every week, so when I'm hungry, I eat one of their breakfasts. Then I take The Foundation (opens in new tab), a new supplement pack that Sakara just launched. I've been taking it for two weeks now and I've noticed a big difference in my skin, less dark circles under my eyes, less puffiness, and more energy. It's perfect for a little pick-me-up before work.

Sweat Sessions

I've been jumping rope with my husband lately, and I've been enjoying Megan Roup's The Sculpt Society (opens in new tab), Melissa Wood Health (opens in new tab), Ballet Beautiful ( (opens in new tab).

Skin Care Routine

I typically spend 3 minutes on my morning skin care routine. I always exfoliate with Dr. Goldfaden's scrub (open in new tab), Dr. Barbara Sturm's anti-aging serum (open in new tab), and Vintner's Daughter oil (open in new tab). If I have 10 extra minutes, I'll add a couple bags of Sakara Detox Tea I sometimes steam my face in hot water with it. It is very high in antioxidants and the steaming helps tighten the pores. I also drink 20 ounces of water first thing in the morning and always add Sakara Beauty Water Drops. We often forget that skin care begins with what we put into our bodies.

Signature Look

I don't wear any makeup at all these days. I just do my eyebrows and give my hair a quick comb. Sometimes I put on more Vintner's Daughter serum in the late afternoon for extra hydration.Zoom Beauty Hack

There is a button in the settings that says "clean up your look" and it is basically a light filter so you always look fresh. Good lighting is key, so I sit by the window.

Signature scent

Heretic Parfum flower porn (opens in new tab).

Worth It Treatment

Facials by my facialist, Lisa Shannon (opens in new tab).

Inexpensive and Chic Products

Blue light cut glasses (Drew Barrymore brand) from Flower (opens in new tab). Very chic and affordable.

Wellness Practices

I breathe every morning, check out Ziva Meditation (opens in new tab). My life has changed. She makes me accountable for everything. It's a kick in the butt for me, but it has helped me grow in so many ways. I love being challenged like that.

On Pandemic Self-Care

More than ever, I hope everyone understands that wellness is not a luxury and it is not selfish. In fact, it is the most selfless thing you can do.

Hidden Talents

I took acting classes for years and loved improvisation.

Business Beginnings

Sakara (open in new tab) was not just an idea, but a "life that must or may not be changed". I had been on a yo-yo diet my whole life and was sick because of it. It wasn't until I studied nutrition and created this program that my body and health changed. I decided it was my mission to share that way of eating and living with the world.

Entrepreneurial icon

In other words, Oprah is doing well. A few years ago, Oprah named us one of her "100 Super Souls". It was the best weekend of my life. And she herself did not disappoint. And she did not disappoint herself.

The highs and lows of being a founder

Both are common. One would think that once you succeed, things get easier, but it's the opposite. It's the opposite: it gets harder. I now have to take care of nearly 200 employees. Every decision I make comes with a high risk. But I love my job, and the best part is hearing how our products have changed people's lives. There is nothing better than that.

Friday night uniform

I don't even remember going out. Ha ha. I'm a simple woman; I can be ready in five or ten minutes. Usually a vintage slip, a cropped fringed suede jacket, and simple black boots.

Evening routine

Same as in the morning, but instead of Beauty Water Drops I use Detox Water Drops. Instead of Beauty Water Drops, I use Detox Water Drops. These Water Drops are rich in chlorophyll, which has healing and alkalizing properties that help speed recovery while you sleep.

Bedside Beauty Essentials

A glass of water, hand cream, and the book A Return To Love by Marianne Williamson. I always try to read it, even if it is only half a page. It's very restful and reassuring.

Lights out

Not much is "typical" in our house, but now we put Baby Star to bed at 7:30 PM and I try to be in bed by 9:45 PM. An early bedtime is essential because she wakes up at 4:30 AM (and then goes back to bed for a couple of hours) and I can hardly fall asleep when she wakes up. Sometimes I forgo an early bedtime to watch a movie with my husband. But sleep is so important for physical and mental health.
