Taylor Swift hits President Trump for "fanning the fires of white supremacy and racism"

Taylor Swift is ready to name names. George Floyd (opens in new tab) was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis and filmed doing so. Protests erupted in the city after the officer in question was not arrested.

Trump fueled the controversy by encouraging protesters to shoot and kill officers if they looted ("These THUGS are tarnishing George Floyd's memory. He said, "I just spoke with Governor Tim Walz and told him that the military will be with him all the way. But when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!") . Twitter censored Trump's tweet for "glorifying violence."

Swift tagged Trump in her tweets, saying, "After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence" and "'When the looting starts, the shooting starts'? We will unseat you in November. We will unseat you in November.

Swift has previously spoken of her disapproval of the Trump administration (open in new tab) in interviews and discussions with fans, but this was the first tweet in which she directly criticized the president.

In an August interview with The Guardian, Swift described the political atmosphere created by Trump (open in new tab) as "gaslighting the American people" and making them "hate America if they hate the president." We are a democracy, or at least we should be, where disagreement, dissent, and debate are allowed. I think he [President Trump] thinks this is a dictatorship."
