Rizzo Invites Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Black Organizations to Instagram

Amid nationwide protests by Black Lives Matter, celebrities are using their own platforms to give voice to the black community.

Rizzo announced yesterday that she will host a live stream chat with the Black Visions Collective (open in new tab), a Minnesota-based organization focused on transformative justice and black liberation. 'I believe in using my platform to give others the opportunity to speak,' he said. 'Join @blackvisionscollective tomorrow at 1pm PST/3pm CT in Minneapolis to talk about what's happening in the heart of the protest and how we can help. ✊?"

Lady Gaga has also offered activists to take over her Instagram account. In a post also shared yesterday, she announced. 'Starting tomorrow, I'm giving my Instagram account over to each organization I've recently donated to in order to amplify their important voices. And I pledge to regularly and permanently post stories and content on all my social media platforms to lift up the voices of countless otherwise inspiring members and groups within the Black community."

In addition, Selena Gomez also said she would lend her platform to "influential leaders." In a post shared yesterday, she wrote "I was wondering if I had the right things to say to spread the word about this pivotal moment in history. After thinking about how best to use my social media, I decided that we all need to hear more Black voices. Over the next few days, I am going to highlight influential leaders and give them a chance to take over my Instagram so they can speak directly to all of us. We all have an obligation to do better, and we can start by opening our hearts and listening."

Protests against the police erupted after the killing of George Floyd (open in new tab), a 46-year-old black man who died after officers knelt down on his neck until he could not breathe for several minutes. Since then, protesters have honored the lives of Tony McDade (open in new tab), Breanna Taylor (open in new tab), Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and countless other black men who died at the hands of police.
