Sophie Wessex talks about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping down from their royal roles.

When Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Prince Andrew stepped down from the active royalty one after another (for very different reasons), the spotlight turned to Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

In the slimmed-down new monarchy, Sophie, the Queen's daughter-in-law and close friend (opens in new tab), has taken on a more important role. And now an extensive profile published over the weekend in The Times (opens in new tab) focuses on her work.

It covers the Duchess' recent trip to South Sudan and her campaign work against sexual violence in the conflict. It also raises questions about whether the Duchess is being asked to do more now that there are fewer working royals than just a few months ago.

"We all have our own little portfolios. I don't think anything will change, but if we were asked to do more ...... I don't know because it hasn't actually happened," she told journalist Christina Lamb, noting that her schedule is pretty full and had been so even before Harry, Meghan, and Andrew effectively quit public service.

"I don't know how much more I can do, because I'm already pretty busy," she said. 'There are only so many hours in the day. People may pay more attention to what I'm doing, but I remain as busy as ever."

She also spoke about being a feminist. I think I probably am. I believe in equality for all."

But when it came to mentioning her recently departed family, so to speak, she did so briefly and avoided commenting on Prince Andrew's friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and the allegations he has received (and continues to deny) from Virginia Roberts-Giauffre.

"I can't comment on that," she said. I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry. I'm sure you understand that I can't respond to you."

He was more positive, though less brief, about Harry and Meghan.

"I just wish them both the best," she said.
