Royal family celebrates Prince Philip's 99th birthday with a rare photo of him and the Queen

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, turned 99 on Wednesday, June 10, and to mark the occasion, Buckingham Palace unveiled a rare portrait of Philip and the Queen (opens in new tab). The photos were taken at Windsor Castle (specifically, the Windsor Castle quadrangle), which continues to be quarantined amid the coronavirus pandemic; according to a Guardian report (opens in new tab), both the Queen and Philip are considered high-risk due to their age.

The Duke is expected to have a "low-key celebration," People reports (opens in new tab), with a birthday luncheon with the Queen to mark his 100th birthday. But when she turns 100 next year, she will receive a special gift: as the Guardian (opens in new tab) reports, the British centenarian will receive a letter from the Queen herself.

The coronavirus blockade prevents Philip from celebrating with more family. 'I haven't seen my dad for a long time,' he says. He's going to be 99 next week, and we're on FaceTime, which is great ......."

"Fortunately, at least we can talk on the phone and do these things sometimes. But it's not the same, is it?" Charles continued.

"You really just want to give people a hug."
