Mini-Coronation at Windsor Castle on the Queen's official birthday

Almost all of the Queen's birthday celebrations were cancelled this year due to the coronavirus outbreak. On April 21, her actual birthday, the customary gun salute was canceled, the Union Jack was not displayed on government buildings, and the Queen spent the day in isolation at Windsor Castle (although very cute birthday calls from Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and Archie (opens in new tab) were there). And the grand military parade "Trooping the Colors," usually held on the second Saturday in June, the Queen's official birthday, was also canceled.

However, the Queen will have a bit of a military celebration on Saturday as well: as People (opens in new tab) reports, the "Trooping the Colour" parade and the Air Force flying parade, where the Queen and her husband Prince Philip are sequestered together will be replaced by a scaled-down salute at Windsor Castle. Buckingham Palace told People that "a small, short military ceremony will be held at Windsor Castle to mark the Queen's official birthday."

The royals usually gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the fly-past at the end of Trooping the Colour, but according to People, it is not yet known whether the Queen's family will be allowed to join the small military salute at Windsor Castle. It is not yet known. However, the ceremony is likely to be broadcast on television; according to People, the BBC is the most likely source, although media arrangements have not yet been finalized.
