Prince William's first words to Kate Middleton were comically awkward

Prince William and Kate Middleton's (opens in new tab) relationship started off ever so slightly awkward, according to a new documentary about the pair. The future Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met in 2001 at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. But William and Kate's meeting did not go as smoothly as he had hoped.

According to royal memoirist Tom Quinn, who spoke in the British documentary William & Kate: Too Good To Be True, the future Duke nearly hit the ground when he first approached Kate. 'One of the funny stories is that he was so eager to see her that he tripped as he walked toward her. How quaint.

Clearly, Kate was equally charmed by William, and as People reports, he impressed her with his student cooking. In Mary Berry's holiday special, "A Berry Royal Christmas" (opens in new tab), Kate says (opens in new tab) I think he was trying to impress me at the time." And his dish of choice was "Bolognese sauce or something like that."
