Gabrielle Union recalls her own sexual assault in Instagram tribute to Oluwatoyin Sarau

Gabrielle Union posted a heartbreaking tribute to the late Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Sarau on Instagram. Sarau was a 19-year-old activist who had participated in the Black Lives Matter protests. She was reported missing, but Tallahassee police confirmed her death on June 13.

Gabriel wrote in the caption: "She was 19. 19. a baby. Oluwatoin 'Toin' Salau was a 19-year-old warrior who fought for America. She reported to the police that she had been sexually assaulted and was found murdered a few days later. The horrors she faced, the trauma she endured, all of it was brought on by a 19-year-old."

The actress went on to plead: "Who cares about little black girls, black teens, black women? She fought for more for all of us. I cannot shake it off. I am her and she is me."

In her caption, Gabrielle referred to her own experience as a rape victim and survivor: "I live to talk about being raped at 19. She is not. The work goes on. The fight goes on. The reckoning continues. Touin should be here. She was 19. She was a baby. Hold our baby tight. Love her. Protect her. Support her. 19."

Salau shared details of the assault on Twitter on June 6." He came posing as a man of God and picked me up from nearby Saxon Street," she tweeted. 'I believed the Holy Spirit would protect me.'

Gabrielle also revealed graphic details of her experience. She wrote about being raped at gunpoint in her book We're Going To Need More Wine (opens in new tab) and provided an excerpt to Glamour. (opens in new tab)

"He threw me to the ground and suddenly got on top of me, spreading my legs with a gun to my head. I began to cower on top of myself as he raped me. I could see the whole room. I saw the poor girl crying and thought. This can't happen to someone like me..." And.

Finally he pulled the gun out of my hand. He stood over me with the muzzle pointed at my head. 'Come on, I'm going to kill you, bitch,' he said. ...... In a flash, he was calm. Then again, he said casually, 'How do I get out of here? How do I get out of here?" I pointed to the exit behind me and he walked out, leaving me alone. I never saw him again. [According to People (opens in new tab), the investigation into Salau's death is ongoing and Tallahassee police have a suspect in custody; there is a GoFundMe (opens in new tab) campaign, which is helping her family with expenses.
