How does Carissa Bodnar and her Beauty Company continue to provide therapy?
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get their day's work done?
Getting 7+ hours of sleep is perfect for me, and I just got the Oura Ring (opens in new tab), a great accountability tool for sleep. When I wake up in the morning, I check my email (which, honestly, I know is a very bad thing) and then I exercise. [I spend about 30 minutes on skincare and makeup, unless I have an event. I'm totally biased, but I love the skincare products that Thrive launched this year: my routine starts with the Bright Balance 3-in-1 Cleanser. This cleanser removes waterproof makeup and is great for both morning and night. After cleansing, I apply the new Liquid Light Therapy All-in-One Face Serum, followed by the Defining Gravity Transforming Moisturizer and Defining Gravity Eye Lifting Cream. All of these products are quickly absorbed and lightweight. Finish with Liquid Balm Lip Treatment. Wash hair 2-3 times a week, so on non-wash days, spend 10 minutes blow drying or flat ironing kinks. If it's a wash day, it takes at least an hour.
I'm obsessed with booze (opens in new tab) and love plain, black coffee.
I exercise first thing in the morning. It gives me energy to start the day and if I don't do it in the morning, nothing gets done. To stay connected while away, I do Peloton workouts with the whole company. My favorite instructors are Robin Arzon, Allie Love, Olivia Amato, Cody Rigsby, and Jess Sims.
I love a subtle smokey eye with neutral shades, and my current favorite is the Thrive Causemetics Perfect Eye Palette Warm Neutrals, a burnt orange shade named Frida along the waterline. When used, it gives an unexpected pop of color that complements the eye color. I also love playing with different fragrances, but if I had to pick just one, it would be Giorgio Armani's Aqua di Gioia (opens in new tab).
Right now, I keep my makeup routine pretty minimal when I'm at a video conference because it's important to let my skin breathe while I'm at home. I apply a light layer of Buildable Blur CC Cream and Filtered Effects Soft Focus HD Setting Powder to eliminate shine from bright lighting. Then, a concentrated application of Liquid Lash Extension Mascara in Crystal is applied to the base of the lashes to create definition around the eyes while maintaining a natural look. Finally, brush the eyebrows and you are ready to go.
Exercise and therapy help keep my mind healthy. Therapy, in particular, has had such a positive impact on both my personal and professional life that I eventually convinced Erin Brower, a therapist from Seattle, to leave her practice and join Thrive Causemetics full-time as Chief Wellness Officer! She has been a great help to me and my employees. She has worked with me and my employees to shape a corporate culture that I always envisioned but never fully knew how to achieve without her help.

I started working as a makeup artist at the age of 18 to earn enough money to finish college. Later, I became a product developer and marketer for several major beauty companies, learning how to source the best ingredients from around the world. When one of my closest friends, Christy, passed away at only 24 years old, I knew what I wanted to do: start a community-focused cosmetics company where every woman can thrive and feel empowered to look and live her life. The hardest part of launching Thrive Cosmetics was when people told me I was "too young" or "needed to grow up." [Bodnar launched Thrive in 2015 at the age of 25. ]
I'm terrified, but I do it anyway

Getting ready for a night out is so slow that it honestly takes me two hours. My go-to look for the evening is to let my hair down, blur it with a smokey eye, put on a lot of mascara, and apply a bold lip. As a makeup artist and product creator, I love to mix and try new things.
My skincare routine is pretty much the same at night as it is in the morning, with the exception of SPF. At least 3 nights a week I use the Overnight Sensation Brightening Sleep Mask over my moisturizer.
I'm usually in bed by 10 PM, catching up on emails, reading my Kindle, and finally falling asleep at 11 PM
