Why 111Skin's Black Diamond Eye Mask is Worth It
Welcome to Worth It! Every other week, I'll introduce you to a new product that I've tested and loved: the kind of love I'm talking about, the kind that drains you to the bottom and tells your friends, "I found The-One." Think of it as permission to splurge on whatever is featured here. Read on (opens in new tab) for a breakdown of the items you don't want to give away, and the latest Worth It.
This luxurious, pitch-black, glitter-splattered eye mask is inspired by deep space, and for good reason. Their creator, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yannis Alexandrides, helped develop a serum for NASA astronauts to combat aging in space before founding London-based luxury brand 111Skin (opens in new tab).
The science behind these hydrogel patches is equally impressive. Hyaluronic acid plumps the skin around the eyes, and a small amount of retinol (the perfect amount for sensitive skin) reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles like crow's feet. To reduce the appearance of pores and UV damage, a yarrow extract called neurobiox mimics the resurfacing effect of glycolic acid without irritation, and luxurious black diamond particles help penetrate targeted, vulnerable skin.
Regardless of age, most people have crow's feet - those little wrinkles at the corners of their eyes. As a 27-year-old who knows every wrinkle etched into my own complexion, I find these indentations comfortable, distinctive, and a sign that I have lived a life of fully expressing my emotions. However, when applying makeup, I sometimes get small indentations where concealer gets stuck or eye shadow looks uneven. They also tend to be more noticeable after sleep deprivation or when the skin is particularly dry. I usually apply eye cream (open in new tab), but if I'm at a big event, on a long flight, or hungover, I use these patches.
Listen up. You may feel that throwing these little gummy stickers in the trash as soon as you use them is like physically throwing money in the trash. But this is not your typical eye mask that makes for great selfie material. When I know I need a serious jolt around my eyes, I slap this slippery mask on for 20 minutes. Then I peel it off to reveal plump, toned under eyes and a freshening of my entire gaze. The skin around my eyelids, which tends to itch from allergies and contacts, also feels calmed. Although the serum contains a small amount of retinol, it does not cause redness or sensitivity to the skin. It's as if I'm in Doc Brown's DeLorean (opens in new tab), drinking last night's inflamed Negroni, or stopping my teenage self from lying in a tanning bed. Take a selfie or two because the mask looks like a sparkling night sky.... It's human.
