Patton Oswalt and Meredith Sullenger are a very nice couple
Actor, comedian, and author Patton Oswalt delighted fans by announcing that he has remarried (opens in new tab) to actor Meredith Salenger, known for her work as the voice of Robot Chicken and for her roles in "Lake Placid" and "Race to Witch Mountain." The two became engaged in July 2017 and married a few months later. Salenger is not only known for her acting skills: she is also, incredibly, a mediator (opens in new tab) and works for a dispute resolution agency when she is not acting. Oswalt talks at length about his love for her, especially about a time when he was in the midst of terrible grief.
Oswalt's first wife, Michelle McNamara, died suddenly and tragically in April 2016 from a combination of undiagnosed heart disease and accidental prescription medication. Since then, Oswalt has been honest about his grieving experience. He dedicated his 2017 Emmy Award win to her, saying, "Since her passing, all the lights have been turned down 50%." McNamara's life and work are honored in HBO's upcoming documentary I'll Be Gone in the Dark (opens in new tab). Oswalt plays a key role in the series, which catalogs how McNamara worked with her team to complete a true crime book about the Golden State Killer to be published. In April 2017, one year after her death, Oswalt shared an emotional tribute to McNamara (opens in new tab) and removed her wedding ring in a symbolic gesture." I couldn't bear to remove it since April 21, 2016. But now it felt obscene," he wrote, "To remove the ring was to remove the last symbol of my denial of who I am now, what my life is, what my responsibilities are. But it is not fatal."
Around the same time (February), he connected on Facebook with Salenger (open in new tab), who had missed the dinner party. The two quickly became compatible and did not meet until May, Oswalt explained.
"Because we talked on Facebook every night for three months and really got to know each other," he told Us Weekly (opens in new tab), "I could see how extraordinary she was. So it was only natural that I wanted to be with this person, to talk to her nonstop every night for three months, to get to know her for a month, and to think, oh, this is the person I want to spend my life with."
Sullenger made his relationship with Oswalt official on Instagram in June (first sharing a photo and then quickly sharing his ID) and has been adorably talking about how much he and Alice love each other ever since.
In November of the same year, they were married. Oswalt said at the time, "It felt like coming home." Sullenger shared photos from the special day:
Actor Martha Plimpton officiated the wedding. Oswalt said:
"My favorite moment was when I was standing at the altar and my daughter walked down the aisle. She was the flower girl and she spontaneously gave me a big hug. It's all right now. I almost started to cry. I was so happy that she hugged me. Like, it's okay now. It was a great feeling. That moment."
Sullenger has taken to Twitter to support the causes she cares about and has also been fiercely supportive of her husband, his late wife, and daughter-in-law.
Oswalt called Sullenger a "poetic woman" in a recent comedy special. He also praised her as a stepmother to his daughter Alice, saying (open in new tab), "She is the very model of the kind of woman I want Alice to grow up to be."
"You can be a good mother, but you can't be the kind of person you want your children to emulate. Meredith is both."
