Lili Reinhart on Isolated Beauty Routines and Restoring Skin Confidence
You may have seen Lili Reinhart in her signature pink lipstick in Riverdale and as Annabelle in Fake Rush, who rocked a smokey eye in The Hustler.
In 2018, Reinhart made headlines when she posted an Instagram story (opens in new tab), proudly displaying acne cream in a makeup-free selfie with the caption: "Tinder profile: hi, I'm Lili, 21, Virgo, California girl. hmu". She explained that she has had cystic acne since she was 12, which caused major self-esteem issues and affected her professional and personal life. Now, as the face of CoverGirl's Clean Fresh collection (opens in new tab), she is trying to show her skin.
The star has since remedied her acne, but she still remains open and honest about her relationship with her skin. Instead of using makeup as a tool to hide, she advocates embracing skin in any stage of its life. 'CoverGirl has always been consistent with the message that beauty is not a panacea. CoverGirl is supportive of any makeup philosophy."
Her philosophy of "Less is more" is consistent with her current isolated beauty routine. Below, the actress talks about her biggest brow fail, her love for accessible clean beauty, and why she no longer cares what anyone thinks of her skin.
Personally, I love natural makeup. I like to show my skin through makeup and accept it for what it is. I like to see skin texture and acne, for example, when women post pictures on Instagram of their gorgeous eyeshadow look, and they have acne in the picture. I think that is so beautiful and so brave. I support the idea of showing natural skin, including scars.
Lately, concealer has become my go-to, especially since I don't wear foundation at all when I'm not going out. I'm a big fan of skin milk, but Clean Fresh Hydrating Concealer has become my number one choice. Regardless of the season or time of year, I tend to be pretty dry, but this concealer is very moisturizing and doesn't leave my skin flaky or flaky all day. If I'm going to wear mascara, I'll use the Clump Crusher Extension Mascara that's in my makeup pouch right now.
I want to go back to my teenage years and say: don't pluck the very front of your eyebrows, let them grow. When I was 16, I was a guest on a TV show and the make-up artist on set told me to grow my eyebrows out. I listened to her and thought, what have I been doing all this time? I have ash blonde eyebrows so finding a pencil that doesn't make them look orange is difficult. The CG brow pencil that I use to fill in my brows is really perfect for ash blonde. I think it's a shade called Cool Blonde, but it's not orangey. It's a really nice neutral color for brows.
I don't want to spend $30 on mascara. I look for the best value when I can, especially if it's high quality. That's why I like the affordability of CoverGirl, and I think it's great that CoverGirl has made clean beauty accessible and affordable, and I hope it starts a chain reaction where other brands follow suit with clean beauty in the same way. I hope other brands follow suit. I wasn't really aware of Clean Beauty until a few years ago. And I know that many people are naïve about what is in cosmetics. Now, everyone is paying attention to what they put on their faces and appreciating familiar brands like CoverGirl that are cruelty-free, clean, and vegan. Makeup is more than superficial; it is deeply connected to our self-esteem. Beauty is very important and for that we need to use quality products.
It's funny how it goes from one extreme to the other, from wearing makeup 16 hours a day to not wearing it at all, as soon as COVID happened, they had to stop production on Riverdale and I fled to LA. So I have to remind myself to keep up with my skincare routine while in quarantine: cleansing twice a day, moisturizing, all that good stuff, but I have to remember to mask and exfoliate. I'm such a mask fanatic that I usually wear a mask every couple of days.
Sometimes, skin problems and breakouts are inevitable. So it's important to focus on your outlook rather than trying to control your skin. I used to have breakouts that were debilitating. I was too embarrassed to leave the house, and if I needed to go anywhere, I would put on a baseball cap to cover my face. I even avoided mirrors. My attitude toward my skin was terrible, and it used to be really bad. What helped me was hiding my acne and... . was to accept my acne instead of doing laser treatments or expensive microneedling.
Hard to accept, but true: No one cares about your acne but you. In other words, no one else is adversely affected by your acne. You are the only one who cares about your acne. Acne brings us a kind of hyperparanoia that makes us think it affects things around us. It's a hard pill to swallow, but no, no one cares about the pimple on your forehead. To keep you from going out and feeling happy because of it is only hurting you. Easier said than done, and I'm still dealing with it, but it helped to remember that acne is normal and natural and doesn't have the negative impact on everyone that we think in our heads.
