Fans of "Hamilton" go crazy for Jonathan Groff's spitting.

In "hilarious" news (he even trended on Twitter for a few hours), beloved actor and singer Jonathan Groff (open in new tab) made the news. To be fair, many singers spit when they sing. And you might wonder if this is news to Groff, but it's not: he is famous for spitting on stage and (poor guy) had to answer questions about it for a long time (opens in new tab). 'I don't know what that is. I think it's a lot of saliva in my mouth. Unless I'm in a good scene with someone and you can see the saliva hitting their face, I don't actually think much about it," he said in 2009. And again in 2019 (opens in new tab): "I spit all the time. When I perform on stage, I just get wet. That's just the way it is."

I've been in shows where the first couple of rows are a "splash zone" (...). "For the first couple of weeks, ...... I can't help it, I spit on everyone. They either enjoy it, laugh at it, or cover their faces by holding up a program ...... I don't care anymore, but at first it made me feel self-conscious." So, as this is apparently well-known, new fans were exposed to phlegm for the first time in the past couple of days and quickly became obsessed.

Honestly, this is all in good fun, and the stage recording is creating new fans of this spectacular show, and this just happens to be one aspect of it. But if you don't know what I'm talking about and are really curious, let me show you some GIF evidence from the Hamilton Disney+ production of what makes the fans so happy/shudder.

I... I spent a lot of time looking at spit GIFs.

I mean, let's say you're a first-time viewer of "Hamilton" and (of course) you're watching the spectacular badassery of the performance and you see Groff as King George spitting all over the place. We could basically see some of these reactions in real time:

Fans were also quick to defend him:

Also appreciating the relevance!

Creator Lin-Manual Miranda and music director and conductor Alex Lacamore also commented (opens in new tab):

Anyway, the important thing is to go see Hamilton now. Not just to spit. (But spitting is an interesting highlight!)
