Netflix's "Sweet Magnolias" will have a Season 2!
One of the only good things to come out of 2020 is Netflix's "Sweet Magnolias" (opens in a new tab), an adaptation of Cheryl Woods' series of the same name. A husband (Chris Klein) is divorcing his pregnant mistress (Jamie Lynn Spears, always welcome on my TV) in order to start over and have to start over. The film is about love, family, and the three of them in a small South Carolina town, and is full of endearing locations and lilting Southern accents.
Fans have compared the show to the Southern version of "Gilmore Girls," and it has created quite a buzz since its debut on May 19. I won't spoil the plot in this article, but I'm serious. Take a look. I promise it's worth it. Especially...
The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) reported on July 23 that Netflix has indeed renewed the show for a second season. After all, the show entered Netflix's top 10 within a week of its release, and over Memorial Day weekend, it was #1 in the U.S. (opens in new tab). Streaming giant Netflix typically renews (open in new tab) based on 30-day view counts, so we had to wait several weeks to hear the official news of the renewal. The first season is based on the first three books in the series; there are 11 books in the series. So you will have plenty to work with for the new season!https://youtu.be/TEgrH93KLgY
The cast and crew are basically raving about continuing to work together, and it's honestly nice to see:
Series co-executive producer Norman Buckley (open in new tab) told The Sun: "My hope is as soon as we can reunite [for season 2 I'd like to get into [season 2] as soon as we're reunited. Once everything is open, and I don't know what Netflix will decide, but a second season would definitely be nice."
Chris Klein also told The Sun: "I think [executive producers] Dan Paulson and Cheryl J. Anderson were always aiming to go beyond season one, and as the story is filled in and fleshed out, we'll definitely be able to take it and tell more of the characters' will be able to tell more of their stories. Because we want to see what happens to Bill Townsend."
Jamie Lynn Spears (open in new tab) told The Hollywood Reporter, "If season two of Sweet Magnolias ever happens, it would be a dream job. The cast, the crew, the whole situation was ideal for me."
Heather Hadley told The Sun about the cliffhanger ending of season one (no spoilers!) told The Sun about: "Why he's gone, why he's back, what's going on, why he's here, why she's here. That kind of thing. I hope the public will allow a season two."
