Leslie Blodgett and 24 Hours of Beauty

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women do it all in a day?

If you're thinking about starting a beauty business, or really any business, do yourself a favor and read Leslie Blodgett's book, Pretty Good Advice: For People Who Dream Big and Work Harder (opens in a new tab). The book includes her adventures as a badass CEO (with bareEscentuals, she pioneered QVC sales of luxury beauty brands and regularly generated over $1 million in sales in the late night hours), no-B.S. advice, and Blodgett's specialty, motivational It's packed with quotes. Now an angel investor and brand advisor, Blodgett is still brimming with witty insights and valuable beauty buys. Here's a day in her life.

6:30 am. Plank as long as I can, then a cup of espresso.

Fasting. After an espresso, eat after 11 am. Indulge in a locked-down, emotional meal of special French toast, breakfast burrito, scrambled eggs with vegetables, turkey bacon and fresh peaches, etc. I don't cook, so actually making breakfast is a challenge. I also take 1/4 of a Herbalife Lift-Off (opens in new tab) in a tall glass of water. This has the "medicine" of happiness in it--one pill a day.

I am ready in 6 minutes. The only time I wear makeup is when I have a virtual event. Other than that, I just use sunscreen. I either use High Beauty cleanser (opens in new tab) in the shower or no cleanser at all and clean my skin with a bamboo pad and lukewarm water. Afterwards, I may apply sunscreen. Lately, I've been hiking and going out in the garden a lot, so I use Blue Lizard sunscreen (opens in new tab) and apply it so that none of the sun's rays can get in. My other staples are Tracie Martyn Face Rescultping Cream (opens in new tab), Tatcha Ageless Revitalizing Neck Cream (opens in new tab), and Nest Wild Poppy Body Cream ( (open in new tab). I haven't used eye cream in months. I am very surprised because I was addicted to eye cream for decades. I don't need to use eye cream.

I brush my hair and then clip it up. I try not to touch it too much so I don't have to wash it for six days. I haven't had a haircut since December, but I've colored my own hair four times, so I want to keep it as healthy as possible. And I always wear a hat when outdoors.

This week I'm blending Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue (opens in new tab) and Bare Minerals Bare Pro (opens in new tab) into a foundation. Nars Soft Matte Concealer (opens in new tab). Bare Minerals Beauty Blush (opens in new tab). Bare Minerals Lashtopia mascara (opens in new tab), Sarah Hupp lip slip (opens in new tab), Fenty Beauty lip gloss (opens in new tab). I also have dozens of scents, all of which are meant to create moods and lift spirits. Recently, I told Mandy Aftel (opens in new tab) that I missed the perfume she made for me 20 years ago, and she made me a new one. It is a wonderful perfume. I would love to release it again. I also love Strange Invisible Libra and Aries (opens in new tab), Ellis Brooklyn Fawn (opens in new tab), and Pinrose Pillowtalk Poet (opens in new tab).

Natural light, but not head-on. By softly capturing the contours of the face, it gives the face shape and life without the wear-and-tear composites of a computer camera. I've learned that lips work best when they are bald, lined (the line should be blurred), and covered with peach-rose lipstick. And eyebrows should be defined and filled in.

Stay informed.

Ingenuity is important.

Crochet. This week I made a 25" alligator.

Preschool Entertainer.

Tatcha Ageless Enriching Renewal Cream (opens in new tab).

5 min: cleansing, serum, moisturizer. Complete. I cleanse with Kinship (opens in new tab) or Thrive Causemetics Bright Balance 3-in-1 Cleanser (opens in new tab). Then I use EVER Youthful Face and Eye Serum (opens in new tab) or High Beauty High Five Cannabis Facial Moisturizer (opens in new tab). I recently tried Tracie Martyn's Enzyme Exfoliant (opens in new tab) and loved it. Once a week I do something totally crazy. I apply Swedish Dream Sea Salt Hand Cream (opens in new tab) to my face over my night cream. I love the thick shea butter balm and the protective shield it provides so that the skin really absorbs the goodness of the serum and moisturizer. And the Kinship acne medication (opens in new tab) is a retinal and salicylic acid acne treatment that I use at night as a regenerative treatment for my entire skin.

In bed, I read a passage from one of the 20 books on my nightstand. This week it's "The Fire Next Time" by James Baldwin and "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. Then I watched a few episodes of Comedy Central's "Drunk History."

Sleep at 9:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
