Lana Condor Talks Skin Care, Favorite Board Games, and Foundation Free
Lana Condor has been trying to keep a big secret at her Seattle home for the past few months. 'The 23-year-old actress is the new face of Neutrogena,' she said. 'I've been at home staring at the walls, trying to figure out how to spice up my life. Like, tell the world about Neutrogena. No, Lana, don't do that."
And last week, she was finally allowed to share, and the response to her announcement was huge. On Instagram, the 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before' star logged more than half a million views and hundreds of congratulatory comments." Neutrogena products were introduced to me by my mother, and I have been using the brand from the beginning, for as long as I can remember," she recalls.
"Because if you don't know anything about skin care, you don't want to talk about it."
In addition to keeping her big news under wraps, Condor has spent the past few months playing board games with her boyfriend, wearing makeup sparingly, and experimenting with skin care. Below, she reveals the one product that actually improves her dark circles and shares why she's foundation-free.
"I was a dancer when I was younger, so I wore a lot of stage makeup. My mom told me to do that to teach me the importance of removing my makeup every night, no matter how tired I was. So my mother introduced me to Neutrogena's makeup remover cleansing towel (opens in new tab) ($5). I mean, this is symbolic. I see a lot of makeup artists' kits, and no matter what they have, they always have this cleansing towel.
My mother also doubled up on the SPF. Because my mother never wore SPF when she was younger and she always got sunburned. So my mom strongly encouraged me to wear sunscreen. I carry Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Face Mist SPF 55 (opens in new tab) ($13). In front of me now is coffee, tea, water, and Neutrogena sunscreen.
"Before the quarantine, I was working nonstop and a big part of my job was to put on a lot of makeup. So my skin really needed to recover more than I thought it would. My skin care routine has changed a lot, but for the better. I started drinking a lot more water. If I don't have to wear foundation, I would rather not because I want my skin to glow without it. Instead of foundation, I use concealer and concentrate on certain areas of my skin."
"I have really dark circles under my eyes and I don't know if it's genetic or because I'm tired. I've been sleeping a lot lately in isolation, so I don't have the excuse of being tired anymore. I started noticing dark circles 5 years ago and have been using this Neutrogena Bright Boost Illuminating Serum (open in new tab) ($23) ever since. I've been using it more consistently for the past 6 months and have found that the turmeric has really helped to brighten and plump up my dark circles. I don't like products that make my skin super shiny. I always feel like it shimmers and looks like a disco ball, which I know some people like, but it's just not my cup of tea. I like that this serum gives my skin a glow from the inside out.
This argument of promoting beauty from within is one of the reasons I am most excited to work with Neutrogena. The Neutrogena brand has always delivered that message and this is a platform for me to talk about what I believe in and empower my voice. You may say you want to help them do that, but there are brands that will not allow you to actually use your voice and preach what you believe. Now, more than ever, it is very important to have a message. People will follow you because they believe in you. But if you don't show them what you believe, it means nothing."
"Honestly, I feel really proud to be the face of Neutrogena in Asia. My first reaction from my followers was how wonderful it is to see an Asian face in skincare for such an iconic brand. I want young girls and men to see this (presentation) and believe that they can do it too. And I want them to feel comfortable using this skincare. For example, the most important thing in makeup is shades. Without a variety of shades, I'm really afraid that I won't feel safe as a consumer. I want to represent inclusiveness in makeup. Beauty can be very exclusionary if you can't see yourself in it. My hope with skincare is that everyone can feel proud of their skin. I want to show people who feel alone that we can all feel safe, represented, and part of something. Inclusion is the number one thing I look for in a brand. I'm excited to be a part of that."
"While in quarantine, my boyfriend and I were dueling for our lives in this Yu-Gi-Oh game (opens in new tab). I don't know if you know this, but Yu-Gi-Oh is a game that can be played by ages 6 and up. I love the pretty board and all the cards are my prized possessions. I have a Blue-Eyed White Dragon deck. I sit across from my boyfriend, put on some ancient Egyptian music, and duel with him. I have made music part of my game. I even recently ordered some props and costumes."
