Will there be a Season 2 of "Love on the Spectrum"?

The popular Australian documentary Love on the Spectrum (opens in new tab) is already a hit with Netflix viewers. This sweet show explores the nuances of dating and relationships between individuals and couples on the autism spectrum. New viewers are finding the show to be a stereotype-busting piece: for example, that people with autism don't date or aren't interested in relationships. The goal of the show was to show that people on the spectrum do want to fall in love and have relationships, to bust myths, and to introduce a large group of real people so that viewers can better understand autism," said creator Sian O'Cleary of Oprah Mag (opens in new tab). The show has been so well received that plans are already underway for a second season. So what do we know so far?

In a word, no. O'Cleary explained that the upcoming season will focus on telling different stories in the neurodivergent community.

"There are so many more stories to tell. We've only scratched the surface," he said. Many fans are hoping for a reunion of the previous season because fans fell in love with the original cast (open in new tab). But the premise of the show is not a "find true love and walk off into the sunset forever" kind of thing-the end of the season was seen as the beginning of an individual's path to potential romantic happiness. And several cast members have since (open in new tab) commented on their love journeys.

Recruitment for Season 2 began in late June. The show has been immensely popular in Australia (opens in new tab) and this promises to be the same. Casting can be quite different from other reality dating shows, at least in season one.

"We had flyers posted as widely as possible so that people in the autism community could come to us and express interest in being part of this series. We received hundreds of applications and found that there was a real need," says O'Clery.

When he started moving forward with the show, there was no infrastructure for autistic people who wanted to date, and the program had to find professionals to help. This season, given the show's popularity, may not require as much work-we'll likely see a new season in 2021.
