A Day in the Life of Nail Boss Sarah Gibson Tuttle
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?
Sarah Gibson Tuttle, founder and CEO of Olive & June (opens in new tab), wants your nails to look good. After moving across the country to Los Angeles, she couldn't find a nail salon that met New York standards, so she created her own. Her mission is to provide an upscale level of service at an affordable price. Angelenos flocked in and Olive & June quickly became a Beverly Hills hot spot. The brand launched professional-level nails in 2019. Below, the manicure-obsessed entrepreneur shares how she finishes her nails.
I would say the first thing I do when I wake up is meditate, but I check my phone. It's the worst habit.
I do a little skin care, then a little makeup, especially when there's a video call, to wake up looking and feeling great. Especially when there's a video call. I listen to everything Shani Darden (opens in new tab) tells me to use: the Dr. Nigma Serum No. 1 (opens in new tab), plus my morning SPF, and every night I immerse myself in Shani Darden's Retinol Reform (opens in new tab).
My morning latte is mostly almond milk with tea. Sometimes I'll have a coffee or matcha latte. If I don't work out in the morning, it won't happen. Lately, Taryn Toomey's "The Class" has been my favorite. (Opens in a new tab) I actually like to work out at home.
I like to look like I'm not wearing makeup and I always wear nail polish. Jellyfish (opens in new tab) in Corsas lip oil and Tropic Equinox in blush (opens in new tab) are my staples. I do my nails once or twice a week. Nails are a truly relaxing moment and make me feel totally pulled together in the midst of this chaotic life. I am currently wearing Sweet & Gracious (opens in new tab) from the new Olive & June loves Zeba Collection (opens in new tab).
As always, I try to be as gentle with myself as possible. These are the moments when I really need self-care and I want to let myself feel all the emotions. On Friday nights, I always cut out of work. It's a magical moment in my week.
A luxurious signature body scrub treatment at Pellecure Spa in Beverly Hills (opens in new tab). There is something about a body scrub that I find physically and spiritually uplifting. Also, Botox. Nothing looks more awakening than that.
Epsom salts from Up&Up (opens in new tab).
Oprah. Is there anything she can't do?
Don't worry about what others are doing. Focus completely on what you are doing, what you are offering, and who you are serving.
Entrepreneurs don't have that!
I am a good runner. I finished a marathon after 22 miles, after I strained a muscle in my lower back.
I try to spend as little time as possible on beauty at night. I just want to crawl into bed. I wash my face, apply Shani Darden's Retinol Reform liberally to my skin, and Olive & June's Cuticle Serum (open in new tab) to my nails. I do not care for my hair at night. At night, I use Baseline's Causus Lip Fuel and Rescue Plus Sleep Gummies (opens in new tab).
I go to bed around 10 or 11 pm so I can get through as many emails as possible, but still sleep until about 6 am. The last thing I do before bed is scroll through Instagram. Again, I want to say that I actually meditate.
