Joe Biden Elects Kamala Harris as Vice President

After months of waiting, Joe Biden has made his vice presidential choice for the 2020 election official: Kamala Harris could be the first female and first black vice president. Biden posted the official announcement on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

"I am honored to announce that I have chosen Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris), a fearless fighter for the little guy and one of this country's finest public servants, as my running mate," Biden tweeted. 'When Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau. When Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Bo. I watched them take on the big banks, helping working people, protecting women and children from abuse. I was proud then, and I am proud to have her as my partner in this campaign now."

Later, Harris also issued a statement on Twitter:

"@JoeBiden can unite the American people. And as President, he will build an America that realizes our ideals," he tweeted.

"I am honored to join him as the party's vice presidential nominee and do what it takes to make him our Commander in Chief."

Harris was chosen from a long list of candidates Biden was considering, including Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-MD), Fair Fight founder Stacey Abrams, and former UN Ambassador Susan Rice.

In March, Biden publicly announced that his running mate would be a woman (opens in new tab). Since then, however, prospective candidates like Senator Harris, now officially elected, have been fighting sexism in the press. Biden allies warn that Harris may be "too ambitious" (opens in new tab) to be a vice presidential candidate.

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the Democratic National Convention will effectively be held from August 17 to August 20 to formally nominate Biden and Harris. Senator Bernie Sanders, former first lady Michelle Obama, and former Republican Governor John Kasich are expected to spread a message of unity (opens in new tab) on the first night of the convention; for more information and to watch the DNC, click here (opens in new tab).
