Wende Zomnir on skincare, makeup and beauty biz management 24 hours a day

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?

Urban Decay Cosmetics' founding partner and chief creative officer, Wende Zomnir, calls herself "the original beauty junkie" through her Instagram bio (opens in new tab).1 Leading a rule-breaking brand like Urban Decay, which has over 1,200,000 Instagram followers, is no easy task. The Orange County-based founder is a mother of two and an avid surfer and snowboarder.

I used to wake up in the morning, check my email, and then read my news feed. So recently I've changed that and am working on a meditation course on the Calm app (opens in new tab). About three times a week, I put on the Celluma LED mask (opens in new tab) and meditate while I do the treatments. Optimal sleep for me is about 8.5 hours, but usually about 7. It used to be much worse and I could only get 5-6 hours a night. But the isolation has helped me prioritize healthy things I wasn't doing before.

I eat boiled eggs, baked potato fries, and berry smoothies my husband makes me. I drink my home made Americano with a Laird Superfood Non-Dairy Creamer (opens in new tab). This creamer is fantastic. I love the plain, vanilla, and chocolate mint flavors. It's also great in smoothies.

My favorite fitness routine is to mix tennis, surfing, and mountain biking in the summer. I love tennis, surfing, and mountain biking in the summer, and I also incorporate live streaming yoga with my favorite teacher, David Dannon. He also does hair on TV and movie sets so I get to hear great stories. I built a gym in my house and I go there for crossfit style workouts, but I miss the camaraderie of the strong badass women at the gym.

In the morning, I first rinse with cold water. Then I apply Skinceuticals LHA Toner (open in new tab), CE Ferulic (open in new tab), Metacell Renewal B3 (open in new tab), and AOX gel (open in new tab) under my eyes. At night, double cleanse with Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil (open in new tab) and SkinCeuticals Simply Clean Cleanser (open in new tab), then use the same LHA Toner (open in new tab). Then choose a treatment: Retin-A, Skinceuticals Glycolic 10 Renew (opens in new tab) (mixed with a few drops of Le Prunier Plum Beauty Oil (opens in new tab), or Skinceuticals B5 Gel (opens in new tab), HA Intensifier (opens in new tab), and a mix of oils. Over that, layer Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Cream (opens in new tab), AGE Eye Cream (opens in new tab), and Latisse (opens in new tab). If needed, I use SkinCeuticals Discollation Defense (opens in new tab) and lots of pore-clearing masks.

My bedhead works for me. I like to let it air dry after my shower. One of my favorite hair hacks is to apply Kerastase Elixir Ultim (opens in new tab) to the ends of my hair and tousle the roots, then lather on Innersense Volumizing Foam (opens in new tab) to the mid-lengths and go to bed damp. Then sleep on your back with your hair shining like a halo. In the morning you will look sexy and ethereal.

I always say that women need a look that works for different occasions. But perhaps my signature is the luminous purple eye. My mainstay products for creating this look are Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (open in new tab), Naked Ultraviolet Palette (open in new tab), and 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Psychedelic Sister (open in new tab). Finish off your eyes with Lashfreak Mascara (opens in new tab) and All Nighter Setting Spray (opens in new tab).

I listen to a lot of self-help podcasts, mostly when I'm feeling stuck or need a different perspective. Meditation helps with everything. My self-care is to take a bath at night with lots of magnesium salts. I love Dr. Thiels Epsom salts (opens in new tab) and Coach Soak (opens in new tab) citrus scents.

The slower pace has given me a different perspective and allowed me to explore many wellness ideas. I am trying to get more sleep and exercise. I'm also working on emotional wellness and have eliminated most sugar from my diet. I used to rationalize snacking on dark chocolate, but now I'm taking my time to slow down, cook meals, and eat good food instead of snacking. I also spend less time in the car, which has helped greatly in improving my health. Even though I am picking up the pace, the changes in the world have allowed me to create some axes to my way of life. I also believe that the current world situation helps all of us see each other more clearly and feel more empathy for one another.

My Selma Pro LED device (open in new tab) ($1795) is not cheap, but it treats wrinkles, pain, and acne. I have athletes and teenagers in my home and they all use Selma. When a pro surfer friend was using LED light therapy to recover from a concussion, I decided to take the plunge. Celluma is not a face mask, but a bendable panel, so you can mold the shape and use it anywhere. I also love the décolletage treatment.

I can't live without my Lansinoh nipple cream (opens in new tab). It is very versatile. I got it as a gift after my first son was born and didn't really like it as a nipple cream. But I'm against throwing good things away, so I started using it to try it out. I found that as a lip balm, barrier cream, and cuticle cream, nothing beats it. Now everyone in my house uses it.

I gave my husband a very nice haircut during quarantine. And I am a master doodler. Ask anyone who has ever seen me transform a printed agenda during a meeting.

My optimal bedtime is 10 PM, but I usually go to bed around 11:59 PM. I always keep a Laneige lip sleeping mask (opens in a new tab) and a large bottle of water next to me. And the last thing I do is read a few pages of a good book. Right now it's Hilary Mantel's "Mirror and Light" (opens in new tab).
