Donald Trump Nominates Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court

[President Donald Trump officially nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett (open in new tab) to the Supreme Court, eight days after the death of Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (open in new tab). Judge Connie Barrett is currently a judge on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and is known for her anti-abortion (open in new tab), anti-LGBTQ+, and pro-gun ownership (open in new tab) views (open in new tab).

Although Connie Barrett is not yet officially a Supreme Court Justice, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Republican) is pushing for a confirmation hearing and vote before the November 3, 2020 election. This is completely contrary to what McConnell preached in 2016 when Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died. When President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to replace him, McConnell refused to vote on it because it was an election year, letting Obama's nomination lapse. Donald Trump eventually nominated conservative Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court instead.
