Meghan Markle's most worn coat styles
From the day she announced her relationship with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's style (opens in new tab) has been a magnet for royal reporters and fans alike. What she wore-or didn't wear-immediately made headlines-remember the tights controversy (opens in new tab). The Duchess of Sussex even chose to create a fashion capsule collection (opens in new tab) reminiscent of her regular items to benefit a non-profit organization.
Basically, people care deeply about what she wears. Since Meghan and Prince Harry stepped down as senior members of the royal family (open in new tab), she has kept a relatively low profile by working behind the scenes (open in new tab), with less public appearances, such as attending events. (In addition, Princess Meghan's public appearances in the U.S. have been limited due to the pandemic.) Still, fans are eager to see what she wears during virtual calls and how she styles her new home (opens in new tab) with Prince Harry and Archie. (Yes, she likes Diptyque candles.)
While we wait for Meghan's next public appearance, let's reflect on her previous outfits (opens in new tab). In addition to having a sizable shoe collection (open in new tab), the star has an ever-growing collection of coats. From timeless trenches to more casual "blanket" coats, they have every style the royal family would approve of. The following is an analysis of six different coats that Meghan wears repeatedly.
A recurring theme in Meghan's wardrobe is neutral colors such as beige and nude. The Duchess of Sussex's reasons for originally choosing these shades (opens in new tab) range from "so as not to overshadow the queen and her more senior family members" to "simply because it is the color palette she feels most comfortable with." Princess Meghan has a particular fondness for beige outerwear and has debuted several coats in this shade in public. For example, she wore a nude-colored tailored coat by Reiss when she attended Canada House.
Wrap coats are timeless, which is why Meghan has multiple colors. She wore a gray Soyer & Keogh wrap coat over her pregnant belly in 2018, and a year later she showed off her fun side in a red Sentaler outerwear. The belted style was flattering to the Duchess of Sussex's figure, pregnant or not, and suited Meghan's preference for a coat that would not interfere with her perception of her royal duties.
Knowing that Meghan might not be able to rock a PVC coat or casual puffer without raising eyebrows back in London, the royal family opted for classic outerwear that included subtle designs. Small details like belts and buttons built into the coat were important to Meghan. One of Meghan's favorite styles was double-breasted, as seen in the photo above.
Our favorite is the tartan check she wore when she visited Scotland in 2018. The pattern, which is also frequently worn by Kate Middleton, looked great on Meghan and stood out more than her usual coat in plain shades.
Trench coats (open in new tab) are a must-have in everyone's closet, so of course Meghan owned several in this style. (This outerwear also goes very well with the kind of weather she experiences in Los Angeles.) With a penchant for neutral colors, Meghan has primarily worn olive and beige trenches. (She debuted two lighter-colored options when she and Prince Harry embarked on a 16-day royal tour in 2018.) They're perfect for layering over designer dresses and jeans.
Princess Meghan has never met a tailored wool coat she didn't like. The outerwear in this category is slightly different from her double-breasted style, with fewer buttons and V-neck lapels. The overall fit is slim, closely following her silhouette. As shown above, she owns a variety of wool tailored coats in different colors.
One of Princess Meghan's coats, which I like to call a blanket coat or shawl coat, is one of the most hands-off. The oversized style drapes over her body and has wide folded lapels. This design is the least sophisticated and least tailored of her outerwear. (The colors she chose for her outerwear are subdued tones, making it easier to style in public. ) Princess Meghan wears this coat to look comfortable and cozy 24/7.
